I'm afraid you're looking for excuses. Plenty of sporting events are getting bigger crowds than they were, or at least they aren't falling. How are women's football managing to get bigger crowds? How did Scotland RU get 58K for a meaningless match against Fiji? And let's face it, if the football WC was being held in this country now, we know the tickets would be like rocking horse droppings. And compared with say 2000, we have a friendly media on side, so it can't be lack of positive publicity.
I don't think the organisers have got it right with the pricing at all but that still doesn't explain why people have stayed away in droves.
There is a fundamental problem here that is always brushed under the carpet and explained away due to the weather/strikes/economy. And it's pretty much every single time.
Rocking Horse droppings , ha! Love it.
But you're totally right, the problem as I see it is that the general public at large have not engaged with the tournament. Remember the Women's Euros and compare.
Part of the problem IMO is the times of England matches, Saturday afternoon isn't prime time tv time and that's important because you engage the public via TV then they go buy tickets to get a piece of the action. I'm pretty sure most of England's Euro games were at 7.45 on BBC 1 or 2 , regular programmes pushed aside, people couldn't help but be aware of it. The attendance targets set depended on neutrals, newbies turning up in droves, obviously some new fans will or have been created, but not enough.

What's your immediate knowledge of, and opinion about, Great Britain's upcoming appearance in the 2023 World Baseball Classic?
It'll be like that.
I watch some of that, don't mind a bit of baseball. I remember seeing the Netherlands play with a guy called Martinez or Fernández or something.
Truth is there ARE American football players and teams in England, there's virtually no RL in Ireland or Scotland.

As for Ireland and Scotland they are made up teams..........
I wonder what Irish, Scottish, Italian etc folk think of their country getting humiliated at this World Cup?
Imagine this;
The NFL decide to have a World Cup, probably they could get three teams competing, USA, Canada and probably Mexico using heritage players. Then they have an England team, made up of College kids and Minor League players. On interview one of the England team says , " I'm real proud to play for England, my Grandpappy came from a town called Lie...cester." Then England team got thrashed 100 -0. I'd feel slightly insulted, that my country was humiliated by a bunch of nobodies pretending to be English.

So you want to give my daughter smackers,
You may be very cool,

No one in their right mind thinks the Daily Mail is any sort of friend to RL, and will stick the boot in at the first opportunity, but this article contains quotes from newbies wanting to try TGG and finding the ticket buying experience off putting to say the least.

I really miss Baz and Tel, the tournament has missed their incisive comments.

All this talk of ticket prices is a bit of a red herring. It plays a part but I believe that's not the main reason for poor attendance figures. I'm just guessing, but it's reasonable to suppose 90% of the tickets have been purchased by RL fans who know the game. You'll notice that poor attendances are really evident at games that are obvious mismatches, that's because RL fans are not mugs, they know the game and know what's worth going to. The general public wouldn't have a clue that say Samoa vs Greece would be one sided or even Australia vs Scotland. Why would people who know naff all about the sport know what's a mismatch and what's not? The answer is that the excitement of hosting this tournament has not percolated through beyond the confines of the already converted out to the great masses.
I'm possibly not best placed to know what the street buzz is about RLWC because I live on the London/Essex border, but there's no sign of the tournament going on round these parts. During the summer I saw almost daily fans from the women's euros visiting London. Outside of the Northern powerhouse area, the rest of the country is merrily carrying on in ignorance about the World Cup, okay I'll rephrase that, not merrily at all, but angst ridden due to the economic and political chaos engulfing us!

I posted this on October 13th, and I'm sticking by it, copied and pasted below.
I fear newbies watching will see a 30- 0 half time scoreline and switch off, and not knowing the game will think it's all like that and not bother.
My ideal format would be 10 teams, two groups of 5, each playing 4 games. Top of each group through to semis. Qfinal play offs, A2 vB3, B2v A3 , two winners meet A1 or B1 in semi finals, then final. That would give a tournament of 25 games, only 6 less than now

Interesting attendance figures may be they are not the be all and end all of how the the tournament will be judged. Martyn Sadler on this forum months back said that if in a year's time the general public are still as ignorant about Rugby League as now then that would be a worry.
Question is, will the RLWC achieve a breakthrough like Women's football or Netball, both had spikes in attendance figures for domestic competitions following international tournaments. We get our answer next year.

So dont post on a Football thread!!
Agreed, this really does annoy me. I don't like NFL or Baseball but I don't go on those threads just to tell people that, I just ignore them.
Football seems the only game / thread that people feel the need to tell others they don't like it. Envy , jealousy perhaps, a deep loathing, presumably The Masked Poster now we know how he or she feels won't be back.
On to football matters, so Steven Gerrard sacked, so it transpires beating the likes of Kilmarnock, St Mirren and the like isn't necessarily what it takes to manage a Premier league club.

Pity the WC organisers didn't have clairvoyance, we could have had a match at Worcester and also Wasps, they could have done with a share of the money generated. Cheered them up a bit.

True, but in football any team can beat any other on a given day (no need to list all the examples of this). The nature of League (and Union) is that the same just doesn’t happen, so we get many more predictable blow outs. I was trying to explain that to someone today, they didn’t get it but that’s fair enough.
Been watching some of the T20 Cricket World Cup, they have a very interesting format.
16 teams, with no hopers like UAE and Namibia ,but the bottom 8 in the rankings take centre stage for the first group phase. The no hopers play in two groups, the winners and runners up join the big boys who come in at the second group phase.
Don't know if that'll work in RLWC interesting idea though.

I though this match had £20 and up tickets, not starting at £35.
Remember also that there's more football/Rugby League fans crossover involving Leeds than anywhere else (IMO), and United are at home to the EPL leaders today. Unfortunate but no one's fault.

As much as i am looking forward to the World Cup i do feel its going to be another disaster. Too many teams to many pointless games and not enough big countries involved. For me the World Cup should have eight teams . The competition would still be over 6 weeks with no mid week fixtures . Qualifying i would allocate 2 places for Australasia and 1 for Africa . Then one more place in a playoffs system between Australasian , Asian and African teams . While northern hemisphere Europe would get two automatic places and America one . Then a play off for 4th spot between European team and America team . Once the eight who have qualified for the finals i would rank them 1 to 8 . The odd numbers would play all the even number teams . That would give each team 4 games . It would be one mini league . The top 4 then make the semi finals which i would make a double header 1st v 4th , 2nd v 3rd. Winners to the final on week six . I feel this would be a more exciting and competitive World Cup .
Wholeheartedly agree, I do feel the format is over ambitious, only football can have a genuine WC with 16 or more teams. World Cups should showcase the very best, no passengers making up the numbers.
I fear newbies watching will see a 30- 0 half time scoreline and switch off, and not knowing the game will think it's all like that and not bother.

Hungary , Poland and Denmark are top ranked teams in the draw ?
As previously stated, The Nations League is important, if not in itself, but for seedings for Euro 24. The ten seeded teams from pot 1 were best 10 NL performers, minus Germany who qualify as hosts, England ended bottom of their NL group and France did poorly , hence they miss out on top tier rank.
Ten groups, top two qualify, plus four via play offs. Play off places decided totally by Nations League positions. Group winners from NL leagues B,C and possibly D are guaranteed play off places, unless they qualify via Euro 24 groups, then their place goes to next best NL performer. Impressive joined up thinking from UEFA.

I've genuinely enjoyed watching Leigh this year, and it'll be good for SL if they establish themselves as a SL regular, and it is possible that Leigh could win SL, just as it's possible Ireland can win RLWC, Bournemouth can win the Premier League and Lewis Hamilton could win the F1 championship driving a Morris Minor.

Interestingly it seems fans have accepted we are in a comparison battle with Women's football which a few years back was nowhere, in the U.K. at least, somethin' ain't right.
