  1. There is a different perspective from us Leigh fans. Last year was only our 3rd appearance at Magic Weekend, and our 1st victory, so obviously we can’t wait for this year’s event.

As for Elland Road, its capacity is just under 38,000 and going off previous attendances at MW, it should be almost full for both days, which should ensure a cracking atmosphere. As for dislike of loop fixtures, Derek tried to achieve a 14 team Superleague when we were in the Championship, but through self interest he was double crossed. Superleague teams will never vote for 1/14 of the pie rather than 1/12.

  2. I can see the Yorkshire championship and League 1 teams suggesting having East  and West conferences of 11 clubs in each, meaning less travel and plenty of local derbies:-The east would have Bradford, Batley, Dewsbury, Doncaster, Featherstone, Halifax, Keighley, Hunslet, Sheffield, Wakefield and York. The one drawback in this is the West division would have to include North Wales, Hurricanes, Cornwall and Toulouse/London, and so would have to be compensated for extra travelling costs. Playing each other in the same division twice would give 20 games and then you could play an extra 6 matches against clubs in the other conferences or say an 8 team playoff system featuring the top 4 clubs from each conference.

Hopefully Leigh get a chunk of the HS2 funds.

Maybe a shuttle service to Wigan station.

Why is not having a train station such a topic of discussion on various threads? I have lived in Leigh and Cheadle, both without a train station for over 50 years without difficulty. Do people not own cars like I have done since I was 22 years old. Leigh has always had a great bus service especially now with the V1 guided busway to Manchester.

Anyway with all the current strikes by drivers on £60.000 per annum, and the repeated lateness of the trains, have they got much of a future?

14 teams in SL leaving 21 in a split Championship?

Would look something like this (based on this year’s league positions for example):

    SL:

Wigan, Catalan, Saints, Hull KR, Leigh, Warrington, Salford, Leeds, Huddersfield, Hull, Castleford, Featherstone, Toulouse, Bradford

    West (10):

Widnes, Swinton, Barrow, Whitehaven, Oldham, Workington, NW Crusaders, Rochdale, Cornwall, Midlands

    East (11):

Wakefield, Sheffield, London, York, Batley, Halifax, Keighley, Newcastle, Dewsbury, Hunslet, Doncaster

East vs West split down the Pennines with the line heading more or less directly south east of Birmingham to the south coast (hence London east and Cornwall west).

Who mentioned a 14,team Superleague. That won’t happen.

  5. How about this as another example of the big team being favoured- 3 Wigan players have been banned for one match each. But guess what- there is a Wigan reserve match next week so they can all play in their semi- final. Meanwhile one of our best players Tom Amone is also banned for 1 game and is out of our semi final. This comes after our disallowed try on Friday when all the Sky commentators said it was a try. Additionally wire prop Paul Vaughn got 4 matches for merely helping a player to get up. Yet French gets 1 match for touching a referee, which is usually treated as a heinous crime. Somehow I don’t think Wigan wii n be appealing!!

I can’t see the feasibility of a 9 team league 1 unless they play each other 3 times.

What might happen is a merging of the 2  lower divisions into East and West :-

East being comprised of Bradford, Sheffield, York, Batley,Halifax, Keighley, Newcastle, Dewsbury, Hunslet, London, Doncaster, Fev or Toulouse, Wakefield.

West:- Widnes, Swinton, Barrow, London, Whitehaven, Workington,  Oldham, North Wales Crusaders, Rochdale, Midlands Hurricanes, Cornwall, Toulouse (assuming Fev.win promotion)

Each in their play the others in their division twice preserving all the local derbies plus as many loop fixtures required against teams in the other region. Simples!!

Sorry I’ve included London in both East and West by mistake

  8. The only game they won’t be able to replicate is an iconic grand final circa a)2014, South’s v. Bulldogs (South’s comeback from extinction and Sam Burgess ‘s broken jaw M.O.M. performance)

and b)2015, another sensational final ended by a drop goal in golden point extra time by Jonathan Thurston to give little brother Cowboys a 17-16 win over the Broncos.

By the way John Asiata played for the Cowboys in this match, and then 8 years later was outstanding in the 2023 Challenge Cup for the Leigh Leopards, with not only the same score line, but also decided by a drop goal in extra time!!

Leigh helped save that season 🙂

Leigh knew the score regarding players and funding and applied to do it, you make it sound like SL begged Leigh.

Anyway It was still classless, they’ve deleted the tweets now.

So you have totally ignored my main explanation about why they used the tweet i.e. the fact that the clubs near the bottom all reneged on Derek’s plan  for a 14 team Superleague, (which nearly all posters on this forum agree with), once they realised they were safe for the 2021 season.

So as what Derek has said ‘What goes around, comes around’. And it just happens to be Trinity.

Leighs social media team being rather classless tonight, they should know as much as anyone how being relegated affects the club and fans, really don’t think they should be taking the ######

This is all to do with what happened in 2021 when Leigh helped save that season when Toronto pulled out late, meaning not only did we start on less money than anyone else, but also all the Superleague standard players had been signed up, resulting in a virtual Championship squad that went on to win only 2 matches. There was no sympathy then, only scorn for being one of the worst teams to grace the top division.
But what really grated with the club was that previously in that season, clubs in the bottom half of the division (Wakefield included) had agreed to back Derek’s plan to have 14 clubs for the 2022 season, but then reneged on that plan when it became quite clear that Leigh would be relegated and they would be safe.

So that tweet would have been sent if it had been Cas had been relegated.

  11. This could be created if say Swinton beat Whitehaven by 4 points next week. This would mean going into the final weekend with both teams on 16 league points and with points differences of minus 320 Swinton and minus 321 Haven. Add to that Keighley would also have16 points and have a P.D. of at least minus 323 if they lose to Halifax. The conundrum for the RFL is that the fixtures on the last weekend mean Whitehaven have to play on the Saturday because they are playing Toulouse, while Keighley and Swinton play on the Sunday knowing what they have to do to stay up.

So to be fair to Haven, should all these matches all be played on Saturday?

  12. It’s one of the saddest aspects of rugby league that the birthplace of the sport doesn’t seem to interested in supporting its local team. When I started watching Leigh in the mid 60’s Huddersfield were always regarded as one of the bigger sides in the league. In fact in the 50’s they were one of the top teams.

Ironically, the rot seems to have started to set in after the 1971 semi-final defeat by Leigh at at Wigan. From that moment the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s were a complete write-off playing wise which with a crumbling old stadium resulted in a lost generation of supporters, which is difficult to get back.
The latest population figures for Huddersfield and Leigh are 145,000 and 45,000, so you would expect the population of the town to support both clubs, and at least match Leigh’s average crowd of over 7,000. By the way why do the football fans hate Ken Davy so much? - didn’t he help save them one and is a former chairman?

  13. Does this mean the end of there being at least 4 games being played on a Friday night with hardly any played on a a Sunday? The reason for this we are always being told is most clubs like Friday nights for hospitality reasons or dislike Sundays because of a short turnaround to the next game which might be on a Thursday/Friday.
