  1. Details of this meeting have been mentioned on the TalkSPORT bulletins this morning where they say proposals for 2 tens and a 14 team division is being discussed. Doesn’t really say whether that is a 14 team division next year then 2 tens or any other combination.

The comparisons with what's going on in cricket right now are interesting, but the parallels only go so far.

No county, rich or poor, member owned or not, can accept the cut in cricket that's being proposed.

Rugby league clubs aren't, as far as we know, being asked to accept a cut in rugby, and if the rumours are to be believed a significant number of them are going to be granted ring fenced status.

If I was a fan of one of the clubs being left out, I wouldn't be worrying about whether my owner was going to sign up to something harmful, I think we'd be on the same page.

I don't however think there will be anywhere near the unanimity among rugby fans as there is in cricket, as many rugby fans aren't being asked to make many sacrifices at all. (we guess)

Fans of those clubs left out will need to unite with their owners and find a way to collectively pressure RFL/IMG to keep the pathway open.

Well the main proposal by IMG suggests a cut to a 10 team top division which does seem to indicate a reduction in matches unless there are going to be 9 additional loop games. The similarities between the reports by IMG and Strauss are quite striking. Both want to cut teams in the top division (R.L. 12 to 10, Cricket 10 to 6) resulting in fewer fixtures. The cricket one then suggests meaningless first class matches by made up games between made up teams of North fv South instead of county championship matches.  And wasn’t something similar mooted by IMG  for our code?

That's because 16 of the 18 counties (I think that's the right number) are member owned. That isn't true when it comes to rugby league.

That wasn’t my point. The reality was the counties were going to vote these changes through before a members petition led by Lancashire Action group mobilised fans in other counties around the country forced a rethink. Could a similar alliance of our clubs fans not at least get the owners to listen to our views especially in relation to the possible removal of promotion/relegation.

I never said the final say. However it wouldn't be wise to implement something like 2 × 10s if 90% of people were against it. That is the whole point of market research.

As a Lancashire CCC member we are also having a controversial restructure  attempted to be pushed through by the governing body as regards the reduction of 4 day ball cricket which would obviously impact on the worth of being a member. However, a concerted campaign around the country has forced  counties to have a ballot on members views before any decision is made. As a season ticket holder at Leigh Centurions I would have liked a similar privilege for us at all the clubs voting on the issue. But I guess it’s too late now.

This Samoa squad is more stacked than Tonga now in my opinion. Tonga’s spine is poor, especially compared to this Samoa spine. Outside backs are better too imo.

Big issue Samoa will have is that they’ve hardly played together (apart from the panthers bunch) and Parish has been a shambolic and even hated leader previously yet, bafflingly, is still there. They need to overcome those issues and they have a real chance to go deep, maybe even win it.

We  (England) have hardly played together either, and look at the players that are starring in the Eels, Panthers, Roosters and Cowboys teams that qualified for the play offs, I.e. Sualli,Crichton,To’o, Tago, Luai, Papali, May and Paulo. That’s 8 of the starting line up!!

  6. The presenters on NRL 360 have confirmed these players are now available to Samoa for the England game:-

    1. Sualli (Roosters), 2.To’o (Panthers), 3. Crichton (Roosters),4.Tago (Panthers), 5. May (Panthers), 6. Luai (Panthers), 7. Milford (Panthers),8. Papalili (Eels), 9.Brown (Wests),10.Paulo (Eels), 11.Su’A (Dragons), 12. Leilua (Cowboys), 13. A’loai (Manly). Subs: 14. Tabuai-Fidow (Bulldogs), 15. Molo (Dragons), 16. Faitala-Mariner (Bulldogs).
Plus they are trying to get Superstar Payne Haas on board.

Can we beat this team in the opening match? I think not!!! This would mean 2nd place and a quarter final against 1st in Group D which should be Tonga, who are even stronger than Samoa!!

  7. If it is a 14 team Superleague, there would be no need of a magic weekend. With the intensity of the play-off matches both here and Australia, could we not emulate the 8 team system in Oz? Here the 7th place club South Sydney have already beaten 2 higher clubs in front of 40,000 crowds and play a humdinger of a semi final against Penrith next week. The interest has been immense as it should be for the play offs. Hopefully it can be replicated here.

  8. Surely it can’t be difficult to divulge the attendance figure- at Leigh it is always announced before the end of the match. Every Championship gate was announced in the League Express last week apart from York’s, yet the football team’s home match against Bromley was given as 3,492. Rochdale is another club that don’t disclose crowds despite playing at the same ground as their football club who gave a figure of 2,173 for their home match last Tuesday, yet nothing disclosed for the Rugby game last Sunday. It doesn’t make sense.

And the Raiders were worth it all the way the better of the two teams but just 10 mins left let them down defensively.

Correction. They were the better team for the first half hour, then Edwin comes on……. Do agree they scored the try of the season via their superb left wing breakout featuring Ritson, Maloudi and Sammut. But the defence second half was abysmal. Ritson must be able to get a chance in Superleague next season with that pace he has.
