I hope Panthers fans are taking it real hard 😂

Well I am a Penrith fan and really enjoyed the match. We did not take our chances and Wigan were stoic in defence and deserved their win in the end. My opinion on the 2 controversial try decisions is that both were no-tries. No complaints from me on the refereeing - it's a tough job!

As for disappointment, Wigan caused me more back in 1959 when I was a Hull FC fan and we were hammered at Wembley. We had a champion team in the 50's with the best pack in our history but Wigan were again deserved winners.

Best of luck for both teams in their competitions in 2024. For the record I think Wigan will be champions and Penrith will not.

I'm glad that it's going to be under international rules.

Nice to see the Bill Ashurst medal for the MOTM. A good gesture.

In 1974 saw him play his debut game for the Panthers at home to Manly?  He was really loved by the fans during his time at Penrith. One of my favourite players when I watched RL in England before I left the the UK in 1966.

If I say so myself I'm as miserable as the next RL supporter but these ptb's are a breath of fresh air. So much better as a spectacle.

They are now well ahead of the NRL in this area having been far behind for numerous years. One of the NRL's serial offenders is James Tedesco who from looking at his efforts in his preseason game, is out to match his 2022 season record of failing to touch the ball with his foot in every ptb attempt.

As for Smith, I was expecting him to be suspended for one match as was Adam Keighran after last season’s GF for a similar tackle. If Wigan had been playing Leigh this weekend would he have been banned? I think quite possibly but if this had been Nathan Cleary in the NRL would he have been banned. I think not.

Nathan Cleary was banned for 5 games for a spear tackle back in 2022( last 5 games of the regular season), so would have been justifiably punished with a suspension for a tackle like Smith's. His half back mate Luai was also out with an injury for that period too.

  5. Bruce Ryan.      A powerful Aus. speedster winger who came to play for Hull FC in 1947 until 1950. Had heard of him from Aus relatives and I was one of a crowd of around 4000 who were there to welcome him when he arrived in Hull by train.

Devastated and shed a tear or two when he left to play for Leeds (who payed at that time a record transfer fee) after watching him play in every home match. Continued to watch him play for Leeds when they came to Hull to play FC and Hull KR.

Outstanding player I loved watching in England and played before I arrived in 1968 was Dick Huddart. (St George).

Bill Ashurst is the other interviewee who is no longer with us. His interview was from 2018 and was part of the Rugby League Heroes series in League Express.

I saw Bill make his debut with Penrith at the start of the 1974 season when he captained the team for a few matches before his fellow debutee Mike Stephenson took over.

In his interview did Bill throw any light on the reason he made a sudden moonlight flit back to England before the start of the 1977 season? A couple of reasons have been put forward with one by Stevo who said it was nothing to do with sickness which was the official reason given.

Always wanted Stevo's story to be true because it was quite funny!

I would put Bill into the greatest Wigan team I have seen since I first saw them play in Hull in the late forties.

  8. My choice at Penrith would be Hull FC, Warrington and Hull KR. FC is the team 1 supported from 1945 until emigrating from the UK 20 years later.

Warrington in 1948 was the first time I saw Brian Bevan (still my favourite ever player) and Roy Francis who took Hull to new heights in the 50's when he came to Hull soon after. Mum's team was HKR and I saw them play with her before being taken by my dad to see FC.

See, this just winds me up so much.

Why tell the players they must make a genuine effort to play the ball with their foot.  Why not just say you have to play the ball with your foot.

This way, if a players doesn't make contact with the foot the ref can say, well at least they made an effort so apply some discretion.

I agree. This PTB rule has been in the NRL for a while now and numerous players still make no effort to touch the ball with the foot . Tedesco is one notable offender who just rolls it back and waves his foot at it. The rule should be enforced that the ball is required to be placed on the ground and then played backwards by the foot. It is not difficult to do this as is illustrated in the women's game.

"Genuine effort to play the ball with the foot rule does not work."!!

The greatest problem for me with the Challenge has that it has seemed to encourage more knock-on calls from the referees, knowing that if they`ve made an error, the captain of the team that the call was made against can challenge it and it will be overturned. It`s so easy now for ref`s to call knock-on for this reason and it`s a blight to the flow of the game. I`m sure it wasn`t designed so ref`s can abrogate responsibility for making definitive knock-on calls.

Other than that abuse, I think it can add to the drama and I haven`t minded it.

Completely agree. It can be exploited but so are other rules eg PTB!

From the time they started to present day, who are your current 3
favourite male NRL teams and please separately say why, for each
    one named.

South Sydney. After arriving in Sydney(1968) joined their Leagues club and followed them until I moved to near Cronulla in 1970.

Cronulla.  Joined their Leagues club and followed them until moving from Sydney to the Blue Mountains in 2000.

Penrith.  Joined their Leagues club and became a season ticket holder until 2023.

Have moved again last July to near Port Macquarie where there is a Penrith Leagues club.

Very difficult to see the gap from the last game closing with Haas, Fa'asuamaleaui, and Martin all returning to the starting side. Kiwis remain unchanged.

The loss last week has really killed momentum heading into what looks like is now going to be an underwhelming crowd in Hamilton for the Final. Kiwis notoriously love a winner but when the national side has underperformed crowds tend to suffer, Tonga and Samoa are ironically the only seemingly guaranteed draws in NZ.

The result last week was especially deflating in the context of the WC semi last year. The Kiwis squad lacks some depth but outside dummy-half and a backrower/bench forward this is basically the full-strength 17, not overly convinced Michael Maguire is the man to be running the show but I don't know who else would turn things around. On the note of competitiveness vs the Kangaroos it really is disappointing because you really felt this side could give then a run given the strength of players across the board.

The Kangaroos have lost consecutive test matches once since 1978 (Kiwis 2014-2015, interestingly enough the French did it in 1978), and haven't lost 3 consecutive test matches since 1961-62 against NZ and GB. I'll admit I really thought this NZ side had the potential to etch its name into one of those records but that seems far fetched now. Nonetheless, hoping for an improved performance at home and a late surge in crowd numbers.

Would love to see a New Zealand win but just cannot see it happening.

The last time I saw Aus. lose 2 in a row was back in 1970. Both were played at the SCG and GB came back from a thumping in Brisbane to win the Ashes. Coached by John Whiteley, who incidentally was in an earlier GB team that won the Ashes in the UK.(I was at all 3 matches in both of those Ashes wins).
