  1. No surprise at all that result. Oldham have assembled a top end Championship squad in League 1 and are spending more by all accounts than Dewsbury and Keighley who previously romped this league in 2023 and 2022. Overwhelming bookies favourites to outright win League 1 and Mike Ford has gone on record with the aim of not losing a game and averaging over 50 points per game. Keighley also spending big and quite clear second favourites with the bookies.
  2. HORNETS BREAKING NEW GROUND Rochdale Hornets LDP Under 16's squad play first game at Hopwood Hall Rochdale Hornets and Rochdale Hornets Sporting Foundation made history yesterday (Saturday 28th January) when the first ever Rochdale Hornets LDP (Lions Development Pathway) Under 16's squad took to the field against our Greater Manchester neighbours Swinton Lions at Hopwood Hall College. It was an encouraging first performance for coaches Andy Bradshaw and Nick Howarth with the game finishing 28-12 to the more experienced Swinton team. Craig Fisher, Hornets Sporting Foundation Manager was delighted and said "Its a real statement and further evidence of the development philosophy of our Foundation and Professional club to be putting these building blocks in place to help develop Hornets of the future. We've have extensively consulted with the RFL and also Community Clubs to understand the landscape and produce something that will not just be top quality moving forward, but allow us to set new standards for our youth development programmes in the Borough with the support of our key partners. A big thank you to our facilities partner Hopwood Hall, the players, their families and Rochdale Mayfield, Leigh East, Pilkington Rec's, Waterhead Warriors and Golborne Pirates who have some tremendous young people involved with their respective clubs and now our great club as well" Parents & Guardians of players who are interested in getting involved can contact Craig directly craig.fisher@hornetsrugbyleague.com

  6. FURTHER LAW CUP UPDATE We would like to further update supporters following last weekends Law Cup postponement Rochdale Hornets v Oldham RLFC | LAW CUP | Sunday 21st January 2024 Further to Saturday's notification that the Law Cup game could not go ahead, we would like to keep supporters in the loop as talks continue with Oldham to try and find a suitable revised date. Due to this coming weekend being the opening round of the 1895 Cup, Oldham felt it wasn't feasible to play mid week which we respected. We do however hope to try and find a solution, with the possibility of a weekend becoming available once the Challenge Cup draw's for rounds four and five are known. A further update will be issued in due course, in the meantime we would like to place on record our thanks to Rochdale and Oldham supporters for your patience and support.
  7. LAW CUP UPDATE We would like to update supporters ahead of Sunday's Law Cup fixture Rochdale Hornets v Oldham RLFC | LAW CUP | Sunday 21st January 2024 Further to yesterday's notification that the Vanarama National League match between Rochdale AFC and Wealdstone FC had been postponed, we would like to issue the following update to supporters. Through the week, we have been in close conversation with Rochdale AFC & Oldham RLFC about the possibility of the match going ahead, and have mutually monitored the weather forecast and position of the pitch. Yesterday, we invited the FA & RFL match officials to inspect the pitch and to take their independent view in regards to the pitch suitability for Saturday & Sunday. Despite all efforts being made to protect the pitch it is deeply frozen beneath the protective covers and despite temperatures set to rise Saturday and Sunday it will remain unplayable until earliest, the middle of next week. The safety of our players, staff, and fans is our absolute priority, so after careful consideration we have made the difficult decision to call the game OFF. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding in this matter. A further update will be issued during the week, with details of a potential rearranged date. The club would like to place its thanks on record to the Oldham RLFC, Rochdale AFC & the Rugby Football League for their support during this time.

  11. RIP MALCOLM PRICE It is with a heavy heart that we hear of the passing of Malcolm Price. Back in 2015, Hornets fans voted for their All Time. Hornets' XIII. Malcolm was included in the team He made his Hornets Debut on 6/8/1966 versus York, away. His All Time XIII citation reads: "Not many Hornets' players have scored for Great Britain in the last 50 years, but this Welsh dual-code international did, against France in 1968.Born in Pontypool, Price gained international RU recognition playing for his home town club. Between 1959 and 1962 he won nine caps for Wales RU and a further five caps for the British and Irish Lions. He was described by Andrew Bennet in his book 'Welsh Rugby Heroes' as 'the answer to the nation's prayers' ahead of the RU Lions 1959 tour. He didn't go, he chose League, signing for Oldham. This classy centre signed for Hornets in 1966, resurrecting his career after serious injury: he ruptured his spleen playing for Oldham against Hornets." He was described by voting hornets fans as: - A fast sleek winger - One of a limited band of players to play for league and union Lions - A classy centre and great servant who coached and promoted rugby league at amateur level in the town. - Malcolm Price won two caps for Great Britain (RL) while at Hornets, playing twice against Australia in 1967. A player - and a gentleman - of absolute class. Well played, Malcolm, well played. Tribute provided by club historian Jim Stringer.

  13. BRAD BRENNAN SIGNS FOR 2024 Rochdale Hornets are delighted to announce the signing of prop forward, Brad Brennan ahead of the 2024 season. Brad joins the club on the back of a successful spells with North Wales Crusaders, Coventry Bears, Hunslet & Barrow Raiders in recent years. Chairman, Andy Mazey, commented on the signing; “We are pleased to have added Brad to the squad for 2024. He has been with us through pre season and is a player that’s caused us a lot of problems when playing against us for North Wales in recent years. He is a big, tough, no nonsense middle unit who will bring experience and depth to Gary’s pack options. Welcome to Hornets Brad!” Brad added, "I have played under Gary before in a successful team and after speaking to him about the team and his plans for this year I just wanted to be part of it. This club has some fantastic facilities, a great presence in the community and some loud passionate fans! I can't wait to take to the field and have them cheering us on instead of playing against them. A big thanks to Gary and Andy for sorting me out and to all the lads for making me feel welcome." Player sponsorship is available for Brad Brennan at £300+VAT for Supporter Sponsor and £500+VAT for Corporate Sponsor. Contact the club for more information.
  14. I guess thats another story all together as i was told the clubs never ever got consulted on Cornwall or indeed ever got chance to vote on it and only found out the day it was announced that it was in-fact going to be a club in Cornwall. Cornwall was born from Hemel being initially moved to Ottawa and then Ottawa never getting off the ground and all of a sudden popping up in Cornwall. Let's not forget that this situation with League 1 escalated by the loss of West Wales, London and for a time it looked like Newcastle had gone also which clearly impacts. Im not sure what angle you are taking on this really as its clearly a common sense outcome that satisfies the vast majority for 2024 only.
  15. Well without getting a UK roadmap out its pretty clear to see that localised group stages minimise expenditure and maximise some vital early season revenues for League 1 clubs. I guess had the clubs not stood up and forced this change the alternative would likely have been status quo and a very real possibility of more clubs being starved of oxygen and further casualties. Newcastle is a two hour bus ride from parts of Yorkshire. Cornwall on the other hand can be 10-12 hours journey from parts of Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire, involving significant travel costs and hotel overnight stay's etc. Our club reported last year at a forum that we now receive something like just 18k central funding and the trip to Cornwall costs us 7.5k. i will say no more. There has clearly been a common sense approach to this to solve a problem for 2024 whilst driving increased revenue from 1895 group games to League 1 clubs, with Championship clubs forgoing any revenue and home advantage. Including Cornwall would have clearly been prohibitive to the approach and the article alludes to them being financially compensated for stepping aside. Well done to the RFL, Andy Mazey, Mike Ford and the other League 1 & Championship leaders i say for working collaboratively to find a short term solution in difficult times with vastly reduced finances and resources within the sport. Context is key, the backdrop to all this is the TV broadcast deal that basically funds the RFL and professional clubs in recent years has effectively halved. Many clubs our own included do not currently generate the kind of revenue through the gates etc to fully mitigate those central funding cuts and are therefore reliant on owner / shareholder financial input and are having to work harder than ever to sustain. The least we as supporters can do is do our little bit in my opinion. I have bought a Platinum pass even though i wont make all games, i have recently doubled my lottery and have signed up for All Hornets membership in 2024. Glass half full.......
  16. I don't think it will personally though i do think a more competitive team on the pitch in year two of a total rebuild should help achieve the targets being set. I think the reality of the numbers in the piece from the board shows Hornets even when having some relative on field success and being promoted and operating in the higher division for a few years are very poorly supported. This requires a mentality shift to some degree from lapsed supporters, but more importantly a new fan base being built from the schools and community grass roots is imperative. With Balderstone Park set to become a Hornets community hub in 2024 and so much being done by the Community Foundation i hope all these people being engaged with the club translate to more / new bodies into the stadium in 2024. Its very clear there will be a much greater emphasis on creating events and a match day experience for families wrapped around the actual fixtures and for me is great to see and very positive.
  17. Interesting piece with regards to League 1 https://www.totalrl.com/how-collective-action-saved-league-one-season-and-what-future-holds-for-third-tier-beyond-2024/
  18. Oldham are spending mid to high end Championship money by all accounts and nobody will compete with that in League 1 this year purely in terms of player spend. It was said at the shirt launch night we did offer him a new deal but the contract Oldham gave him was two years and four or five times the amount he was being paid at Hornets. Good luck to the lad.
