Full Time Report: England 20 Australia 28

England’s Sam Burgess was placed on report by referee Henry Perenara as Australia opened their World Cup campaign with an eight-point victory in Cardiff.

Burgess hit Australia’s Sam Thaiday high in a 63rd minute tackle as England fell to defeat in the tournament opener.

After England had dominated the first 20 minutes and opened up a 10-point lead with tries from Ryan Hall and Leroy Cudjoe, Australia responded with scores from Johnathan Thurston, Greg Bird and Billy Slater.

Brett Morris scored four minutes into the second half and after that promising opening 20 minutes England were suddenly feeling the force of the Australians. But it was George Burgess, on 51 minutes who forced his way over, Sinfield’s conversion cutting the deficit to six points.

Thurston with a penalty and an unconverted Darius Boyd try put Australia 12 in front before Josh Charnley scored a late England try, Thurston taking the man of the match award.
