Freelance Rugby League journalist Ben Giles believes the charge-down rule needs changing – read his thoughts and let us know if you agree…
Time and again this season we have witnessed poor positioning by a playmaker, resulting in a rushed kick that is charge down by an eager defender.
The result? Often another set for the attacking side who regain the ball, as more of their players are behind the kicker. Is that fair? I’m not so sure.
A charge down is already deemed different from a knock on, so why should the defending team be worse off after good pressure and poor attacking play?
A charge down should result in the attacking side’s set resuming should they retain the ball, if you ask me.
