Player Development League gets off the ground

THE Player Development League, which was launched earlier this year to provide youth and junior teams that are unable to commit to a full season with fixtures, got off the ground with an Under 11s match between Bassetlaw Bulldogs, of Nottinghamshire, and Lincolnshire’s Immingham Wasps.

There are likely to be many more games taking place over the next few months, over 80 teams having registered interest.

The Rugby Football League has confirmed its delight with the initial response and is encouraging new teams, and existing sides that perhaps lack large squads – and clubs that may want to give fringe players a run-out – to get in touch.

Clubs and schools already involved in other competitions could, it is felt, also benefit from occasional PDL fixtures, subject to permission being granted, while the emphasis will be on playing games rather than on results.
