Thornton excited by Aizue

Of all the signings made across the divisions this year, the arrival of Makali Aizue at Doncaster may be the most astute business of all.

The 37-year-old Papua New Guinea international is Donny’s big name signing ahead of 2016 as they go in search of an instant return to the Championship.

Aizue dropped down a division to join Doncaster, leaving Dewsbury Rams, and Thornton is eagerly anticipating the day he gets to watch his new man in action.

“It’s a massive signing for us,” he said.

“When we were made aware that he was available we sat down and soon realised how important he would be.

“Makali was the glue we were looking for and his experience and knowledge will be invaluable for the young guys in the squad.

“He’s a character. He’s great to have around the place and I’m sure we’ll see the benefit of that on the field as well and he seems to have a new lease of life.

“We know how devastating he can be when he’s running and tackling like he can do. With the budget we have, we wanted to bring some named players in who people are familiar with.

“He’s a fan favourite wherever he goes because of the way he plays and I hope he’ll have the same effect on the Donny fans. It’s generated some interest around the place and hopefully he’ll be a massive boost for us.”
