Thunder too strong for York as Newcastle weekend kicks off

Newcastle Thunder raced into a 24-4 half-time lead tonight against York City Knights at Kingston Park before the Knights recovered somewhat in the second half, but not enough to prevent Thunder winning 32-14 and moving into second place in the Kingstone Press League One table behind Oldham on points difference.

In front of a crowd of 2,557 Thunder scored four first-half tries through Macauley Hallett, two from Louis Sheriff and Matty Beharrell, with Beharrell landing four conversions, after York had opened the scoring with a fifth minute try by Josh Tonks.

In the second half Thunder moved further ahead with a try from Matthew Marsh, again converted by Beharrell, before York replied with tries from Lee Waterman and Liam Cunningham, with Ben Dent converting the final try, before Beharrell landed a late penalty for Thunder.
