Evalds relishing Magic experience

Salford Red Devils full-back Niall Evalds believes a win in the opening game of the Magic Weekend on Saturday (2.30pm) against Widnes Vikings could be the catalyst needed to fire themselves into the top eight.

Evalds, who has cemented a spot in Salford’s side this season, is expecting a tough game against the Vikings who are just two points above the Red Devils in the First Utility Super League.

“It’s a huge game for both teams,” he said.

“We’re in similar positions in the league table. As well as it being the Magic Weekend opener it’s important we stay focussed on the two points required.

Salford, who lost to Widnes at the Etihad in last season’s Magic Weekend, began the 2015 campaign brightly. But a number of injuries have seen them slip down the table.

Evalds, who will be making his Magic Weekend debut on Saturday, says he can’t wait to play in front of a big crowd at St James’ Park.

“I’ve never played in a Magic Weekend fixture before but I’ve watched a few of them and it’s always a good spectacle.

“It should be a really entertaining game for the fans. Both teams like to throw the ball around so it has all the ingredients for another exciting match.

“I can’t wait to play in Newcastle. It’ll be the biggest crowd that I’ll have played in front of.

“It’ll be good to experience the crowd at St James’ Park. There should be a carnival atmosphere and I can’t wait to get out there.”
