Wane impressed by Lloyd after “penny drops”

Wigan Warriors coach Shaun Wane has revealed that youngster Rhodri Lloyd could be in contention to feature for the club on Friday for the first time in almost two years.

Lloyd was sent out on loan to Widnes last year having not featured for Wigan since August 2013. But Wane, speaking to the Wigan Today website, says that he’s been impressed by Lloyd lately, and that could prompt a return against Hull KR this weekend.

Lloyd could feature after centre Anthony Gelling was ruled out for between six and eight weeks due to a hamstring injury and, with Joel Tomkins likely to move into the backs, it opens a space for Gelling.

“I like what he’s been doing. He’s a good athlete, he’s training really well and I’ll be very at ease putting him in at the moment,” Wane told Wigan Today.

“Last year, he was way below what I wanted at Widnes. But now the penny has dropped and he knows he’s under pressure.

“I’m past having people here who aren’t pushing for first-team spots.”
