Wane silent on Tomkins speculation

Wigan Warriors coach Shaun Wane has kept tight-lipped on talk linking Sam Tomkins with a return to the club – but did admit everyone would love to see him playing in a Wigan shirt once again.

Tomkins announced on Wednesday that he would be leaving the NRL at the end of the season to return to Super League – with a deal expected to be announced in the coming days.

But with the destination of Tomkins not yet clear; Wane was non-committal on any questions thrown at him about Tomkins returning to Wigan for 2016.

He said: “I don’t know the reasons why he’s left; when I spoke to him a few months ago he seemed happy at the Warriors. He’s chosen to make his move, but I’ve only spoken to him about his injury. He was a bit down about that, but since then I don’t know what’s happened.

“I’m not surprised he’s homesick – Wigan is a great town. Everyone gets upset when they leave here! I’m not surprised, and I know he likes it around here and all his family around here. He was always never going to settle anywhere else – he loves living in this town.

“Everyone would love to see him back in a Wigan shirt I’m sure; he’s a great player and he’s one of the best in the world, there’s no doubt about that.”
