“We forget how young Williams is,” says Wane

Shaun Wane has issued caution towards England picking talented Wigan half-back George Williams for international honours this year – saying it could be dangerous to rush him into the set-up too soon.

A large contingent of England players met in Lancashire last night for a video meeting with coach Steve McNamara, who is still in Australia and not set to return until next month.

Williams was understood to be involved in that meeting, and when asked at his weekly press conference whether he thought the youngster was ready, Wane said although it would be great for him to be involved, it is easy to forget how young he is.

“I think being on the edge, and being in the environment, would be a great experience for George,” said Wane.

“But whether he’s ready for Test rugby, personally I think he needs a rest.

“He’s had a big year and been very good for us, but we forget how young he is, and he’s had a lot of pressure on his shoulders.”
