Wigan’s extraordinary West Yorkshire hoodoo

Amazingly, Wigan head for Wakefield tonight not only aiming to pick up their first away win of the season, but aiming for a first win in the county of West Yorkshire since September 2013 – a run of 19 months.

That came against Huddersfield Giants in the play-offs, and if you’re looking even further back for Wigan’s last regular season win in the county, it came all the way back in June of that year, an astonishing 22 months.

Throughout that time they’ve failed to register a single win, but they will be looking to end that incredible run tonight when they face bottom side Wakefield.

Here is that West Yorkshire hoodoo of Wigan’s in full.

9th March 2014: Castleford Tigers 36-31 Wigan Warriors
The Warriors run Castleford close in the early season at the MAH Jungle, but ultimately come up short thanks to a late Luke Dorn try that seals a thrilling win for Daryl Powell’s men.

2nd May 2014: Leeds Rhinos 28-12 Wigan Warriors
Despite only trailing by ten points at the break, the post-Easter lull catches Wigan out, as they slip to defeat at Headingley Carnegie against championship rivals Leeds Rhinos.

29th May 2014: Huddersfield Giants 31-22 Wigan Warriors
11 points from the boot of Danny Brough lay the platform for another Wigan loss in West Yorkshire, as the Warriors lose out by nine points to Paul Anderson’s side in Huddersfield.

22nd June 2014: Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 36-28 Wigan Warriors
Wigan’s West Yorkshire jinx continues at the hands of a rejuvenated Wakefield side who, under new coach James Webster, pick up one of several impressive scalps that ultimately saw them avoid relegation comfortably.

27th July 2014: Bradford Bulls 16-8 Wigan Warriors
A low scoring game at Odsal, but relegated Bradford knock off the Warriors to continue their West Yorkshire curse with a hard-fought 16-8 win against Shaun Wane’s side.

6th March 2015: Castleford Tigers 42-14 Wigan Warriors
Another loss at the MAH Jungle for Wigan, this time at the start of 2015. Castleford shrug off their early season inconsistency to blitz the Warriors in a wonderful performance.

20th March 2015: Leeds Rhinos 26-14 Wigan Warriors
Two weeks after that loss to the Tigers, Wigan are back in West Yorkshire again – and again lose out to a team from the county. This time Leeds continue their impressive start to the season by defeating Shaun Wane’s side.
