Wilkin looks like a seven, insists Saints boss Cunningham

St Helens captain Jon Wilkin is reaping the rewards of a pre-season spent working on playing half-back, with Saints coach Keiron Cunningham insisting he now looks like a scrum-half.

Wilkin stole the show during the Saints’ 32-24 victory against Warrington Wolves on Thursday night, scoring one try and having a hand in several others as the skipper inspired his side to a sixth straight win to kick off Super League XX.

And Cunningham believes Wilkin is starting to hit back at those who said he couldn’t play in the halves, describing his performance as “very good” after the match.

“People keep telling me he can’t play seven,” Cunningham said. “He has done a lot of work in pre-season and now he actually looks like a seven.

“I thought he managed the side really well tonight, he was very good.”

Talented youngster Joe Greenwood left the field with a nasty-looking arm injury midway through the second half, but Cunningham appeared to pour cold water on any fears the 21-year-old had done anything too serious.

“He got a bump on his elbow,” said the Saints coach. “We’ll get him checked on Monday but the medical staff aren’t too concerned, which is pleasing.”
