Incidentally, in Williams' defence, his effectiveness is entirely dependant on the players around him. He is no more a play making 6 than Myler. Put the right players around him, and he is very effective though - 2nd in the league and runners up in the GF with him at 6 suggests he has something about him.
Maybe with a decent 6 Wigan would have been 1st and Grand Final winners.
I was impressed with Salford today. They showed great speed in attack, particularly when spreading the ball wide. The forwards made good ground down the middle. Murdoch-Masila looks like he could be a real handful although to be fair his opposite number, Nick Gregson, had a bit of a size disadvantage. In previous years a weakened Wigan side may have stood up a little better but Salford seem to have recruited well, to the point where mismatches as the one just mentioned were exposed a little more.
From a Wigan POV, lots of fans seem to be in meltdown mode already but I'm not too concerned. For one, a poor pre-season is often a good omen. Mind you Wigan generally just have poor pre-seasons every year and end up at the right end of the table when it matters. The team started slowly which isn't a surprise. Losing Williams after a quarter of an hour limited our ability to challenge Salford and meant it was harder to find a way back into the game. Just as Leigh did last week, they targeted Powell as he was the only creative player. Ben Flower was good. He's been Wigan's best player in the two pre-season games.
My biggest worry is that Lewis Tierney still inspires no confidence at all. He seems so weak under the high ball that it's hard to imagine teams doing anything other than peppering him with high kicks. I rate Gabe Fell more but he's only had 10 minutes at fullback in these friendlies, and it's the younger fringe players that benefit the most from them.
I'd expect most of the England internationals to be in the side to face Catalans although I don't think it's essential to rush them all back.
Can't see how losing Williams made any difference as in my opinion he creates very little and is very fortunate to be wearing the Wigan no 6 shirt.
the most blatant false advertising i have seen. This wasnt billed as an academy match, it was a tenner admission, yet Widnes even wore the Academy shirt.
It was not a first team friendly. Plenty who made the effort, from both sides were peed off.
Widnes are making mugs of their fans, but hey the club is getting what they deserve.
No Dennis Betts, literally no first teamers, false advertising.
Denis Betts was with the team but you say otherwise. Please comment.
