Think I misunderstood, as I thought you were advocating the East/West to become unreserved. Matt knows the fun in large away support having designated seating - does it need more stewards btw

Yes, particularly in an away end where you’ve got a general unfamiliarity with the seats, people not being in the habit of buying their tickets to be sat together etc. I tend to see both sides of it in football - Bolton away games the reserved seating is rarely adhered to, even in a sell out, whereas I’m currently sat having a pint at Stansted en route to Dundee Utd v Hibs where I know reserved seating will be very much observed in the away end, even though it’s sold out.

    Does the figure include boxes?

Yes it does. Although there’s an extra dozen or so seats (effectively 1 extra seat per box) that aren’t used, again to get over the 12,000 capacity for licensing, but the fire regs only permit 10 people in each single box. The main wins would be to have some outside the box thinking on being able to utilise the extra capacity in the North and consider removing the stage and the complications that brings. In reality I think it’s better to go with the lower capacity and push more tighter to a sell out (particularly given the messaging about members only in the North etc)

Did the original 12k capacity not also include spectators being in blocks E and F of the West stand? When the stadium first opened I remember you could buy tickets for these blocks for a few years until they swapped the red seats out for black ones and made it media only.

It was initially under 12,000 but the licensing process saw a random half dozen in the East(!) to take capacity to 12,005. Seats were then put in the South around the camera gantry which took capacity to 12,168 and then three seats were lost with the new screen to take it to 12,165 which includes the unused 882 and the padded seats in Blocks E & F. In the immediate pre-Covid these were used for bookings in the banqueting suite (although invariably people preferred to watch from the window rather than walk downstairs then half the length of the pitch). Covid restrictions then meant it was restricted to non playing players and I think that’s largely still the case apart from a few invited guests and any media overflow from the desks in the middle.

Can’t remember what I had for breakfast this morning though.

Which is a shame as I have been in the LSV with 12005 in attendance !

Should bin all reserved seating for Wire, Wigan and Saints due to demand.

South stand is unreserved - you arent going to move those invested for the season in specific seats for a few big game charley's Looking at the tickets left for Wire Wigan and Saints I would be planning on settling in at home or buying a season ticket ps thought it was 10600

I presumed he meant bin unreserved seating (apologies for putting words in your mouth Snowy owd lad) so that the 10% in the South isn’t lost (approximately 210 seats)

Said match in question was the Cas v Widnes semi final and that was the only game that the North Stand had the full 3,768 capacity utilised rather than the 2,886 that is used for Leigh games. Also got to consider losing a good few hundred seats in the East because of the stage.

  4. Some of the Challenge Cup games will have had odds like that. Tbf it’s essentially the reason that the handicap exists. Would fully expect the Jillaroos to win by 60+ in all honesty. The levels of professionalism are light years apart, not to mention the player pool. The key is to narrow the gap over the coming years as much as possible.

Is there a reason you have missed out Warrington Matt?

Salford would be my choice, when in the Championship I went to watch Salford in SL a few times when there was no clash with Leigh fixtures, and even more so when Mr Beaumont and Doc Koucash were bestest buddies and the allowed supporters from either club in for a tenner.

Yes I missed Warrington off as they don’t really register to me (even though I watched them regularly in the mid 2000s), whereas the other 3 are the ones I’d always want us to beat.

How likely is it that another record might tumble this year?  83,357 is the current record, set in April 2023.  This year for Easter weekend we have:

    Thursday:  Wakefield vs Cas (8000)
Friday:   Hull FC vs Hull KR (25,000)
Friday:  Wigan vs St Helens (25,000)
    Friday:  Leeds vs Huddersfield (18,000)
    Saturday:  Leigh vs Warrington (11,000)
    Saturday:  Catalans vs Salford (10,000)

In brackets I have obviously put the best-case scenario attendances, which would give a resounding 97,000 total.  I don't expect that to be the total, but I do expect the previous record to be comfortably broken.

The games at Wigan and Hull can only go up to 24,000ish because of unreserved seating and the like. Similarly Leigh is nearer to just over 10,000 capacity while I think you can chop at least a couple of thousand off the Leeds crowd. That said, I would hope the record might still be under threat overall.

the concept through me abit as an Oldham Athletic fan I could never have a Premier League side aswell. Is it common for fans of Championship/L1 teams to have an SL side?

Believe it or not, we get the same question at some League One away games watching Bolton 🤦🏻‍♂️ Wouldn’t say it’s particularly common in RL other than in Cumbria (in my experience, at least)

We used to ask the question from the original post every few years whenever Leigh were having a financial crisis and the answer was always Swinton. The ‘hangman’ stuff from last season left a bit of a sour taste though so I would probably tag on with a few mates at Halifax.

That said, if I wasn’t already a Leigh fan then technically there’d be no reason not to consider Salford, Saints or Wigan, but I’ve not long since had my tea 🤢

Think you are being rather generous there Matt.

Maybe over egged a little bit, but I’d have certainly said just over 200. Made a bit of noise occasionally too (albeit admittedly I do sit towards that end)

Well why not come up with what Warrington did last year in their home fixture with Catalan, they promoted and allowed walk ups in for a Fiver, I'm sure that the Leigh season ticket holders wouldn't mind, just as they didn't - me included - when Mr B threw the doors open for the Batley game in 2016 which as you know resulted in the record attendance for a Leigh game at the LSV.

Quite true H. The South stand was basically empty yesterday, so the other three sides of the ground were very well populated indeed.

Rather than an empty South Stand (which won’t look good on Mainstream Sky) do exactly what you say to promote more growth. A fiver sounds reasonable, get the families going and an extra 100 attending for the rest of the season is 100 more to the fan base and considerable in regards to cash.

    Makes sense !

There’s a message on the ticket website “SCHOOL OFFERS CAN ONLY BE REDEEMED IN THE SOUTH STAND”, so presumably something in hand on that front

@LeytherRob Apologies hadn’t seen you’d already mentioned about the schools offer

Agree Matt, but the LSV is a football pitch that Leigh play on.

    The grass is so short.

Any heavy rain could cause issues...

Wind not too much of a mither but torrential rain is another issue.

Heavy rain would be the last of worries for a postponement tbh, the drainage is top class (largely because of the football tbf)

Only forecast to be light rain now anyroad

Looking at the weather forecast tomorrow in Leigh..

I have just received a yellow weather warning for torrential rain and high winds.

Wonder in the game could be in jepody.?

Hull KR wouldn’t have played a single home game in the 90s or early 2000s if games were called off because of the wind. Gusts of 40mph aren’t particularly noteworthy and it is forecast to calm down before half time.

Rare for more to be particularly confident, but with a good rest after the Wigan game I’m going Leigh by 14.

It's 70 years since they were last league champions. They went for 35 years without winning the Challenge Cup between 1974 and 2009. Could be argued that they've done a great job in more than doubling the average attendance since leaving Wilderspool?

For all the nostalgic talk of the Zoo, the differences in gates between Wilderspool and the HJ (LL?) is night and day.

After a quick google search, 21k is their average.  Setting the bar a bit low there aren't you?

Tbf a few years ago the combined HKR/HFC crowd would be nowhere near Hull City*, so that’s huge progress in reality.

    *Discounting their ‘protest’ years

If Field's try had stood then maybe I could understand the logic in him being one of the better players, but the fact is it didn't and that meant his biggest contribution to the game was blowing the best scoring opportunity we had. He was fairly average at best.

Armstrong was impressive, I thought Frankie Halton was outstanding. Can't say I've taken much notice of him previously but I was really impressed.

It might seem a bit left field but I thought the best player in that game was Liam Marshall. In a match that was ridiculously tight I thought he was head and shoulders above everyone else in terms of effort and the strength of his carries.

Frankie has certainly gone the long way round in terms of reaching the level of a SL regular, but I reckon he could be a huge player as the season goes on.

RLonTV reports STH-SAL BBC2 viewing figures as 318k average. A bit down on last year's opener (CAS-WIG).

Not bad tbf given I’m sure there will have been plenty who decided not to bother once they’d heard about the team selections.

It's 8 miles and less than 30 mins. Many Wigan fans would be travelling similar.

As much as I thought our support was maybe 500 light on what I’d have hoped for, 30 mins between the dream is an absolute dream. I drove from Leigh to Wrexham on Tuesday for the Bolton game in a quicker time than I got from Leigh to Wigan on Thursday. Not even kidding.

Don't apologise. You are entitled to an opinion, rational or irrational.

It’s literally the reason this forum exists. Probably even rugby league as a whole.

Linked to the Twitter thread, it’s one again well worth pointing out that the Hope & Glory book is well worth a read. I was at primary school when the switch to summer happened so I do at least have memories of going to pre-SL games, but little memory of the political side of things and how it all panned out. We even had Leigh’s head coach of the time, Ian Lucas, coming in to a school assembly to sell us the benefits of being able to stand in the sun watching RL with an ice cream. Can’t say it’s happened too often!

As much as I’ve been positive on other threads as to how much exposure Super League is currently enjoying and in particular the widespread increase in crowds, it doesn’t feel like we’re going to see any current players pitching up on Emmerdale any time soon.
