Head Coach Adrian Lam praised the commitment of his youthful Wigan side following their defeat to St Helens.

Wigan made a number of changes with Saturday’s Coral Challenge Cup Semi Final on the horizon, with six players making their debuts in Cherry and White.

Despite a spirited effort from the young side, the experience of St Helens shone through to seal the victory for Kristian Woolf’s men.

Speaking to the media shortly after the game via Zoom link, Lam explained how he was able to take away positives despite the scoreline.

“After 80 minutes against St Helens, I’ve gone around to every single one of them and said ‘look, it’s not that hard is it?’.

“Playing against a quality side like that, they now know they can do it. Let’s just keep working hard and improve them for the future.

“I’m just proud of their efforts.”

The Papua New Guinean also explained how the final score was not at the forefront of his mind during the game.

“I wasn’t too concerned about the score tonight, I knew they’d play well after a week off and a defeat in the Challenge Cup.

Umyla Hanley, Harry Rushton, James McDonnell, Kai Pearce-Paul, Sam Halsall and Ben Kilner all made their debuts on Tuesday evening.

“I just wanted to see a team that was committed.

“I thought we did some really good stuff at the start of the game, but we had the sin bin and shortly after that it was a real arm wrestle.”

The Head Coach provided an update on back-rower Jack Wells, who left the field in the first half with a knee injury.

Lam said: He looks like he’s gone some medial ligament damage and possibly some cartilage damage.

“It could be between four-to-six weeks I’d say for Jack. He’s worked really hard to get back in the mix and he was doing some great stuff out there tonight.”
