In Memoriam: Danny Campbell

Wigan Warriors are saddened to learn of the passing of former player Danny Campbell.

Campbell was born on 20th April 1956 in New Zealand. He moved to England and signed for Wigan in 1979 from the Far North Falcons and represented Northland. 

He made his debut for Wigan on 29th September 1979 against Castleford in a John Player Trophy match, Wigan lost 10 points to 24.

Campbell played prop in Wigan’s John Player Trophy win of 1983 – their first trophy for 10 years, and a substitute in the famous Challenge Cup Final win on 4th May 1985 v Hull FC.

Between 1979-80 and 1985-86, Campbell played 145 matches for Wigan, scoring 12 tries. His Heritage Number is 755.

Internationally, he was part of the New Zealand squad during their 1980 tour of Great Britain and France, but did not appear in any of the Test matches.

He passed away on 22nd August 2021 at home in Mitimiti, New Zealand.

The thoughts of everyone at Wigan Warriors are with Danny’s family and friends at this very sad time.
