Dominic Waith’s magical story

The magical story of how rugby league and Wigan Warriors have transformed the lives of the Waith family.  

Dominic Waith, who has Down’s syndrome, has represented Wigan Warriors’ LDRL team since 2018 when he first fell in love with the sport after watching the Warriors defeat Leeds Rhinos from the stands at the DW stadium.  

Dominic’s mother, Maxine, who attended the match with her son, recalled the special memory: “We were given tickets to come and watch a game and he absolutely loved it – the stadium, the noise, the crowd, the game.

“For the first time as a family we felt like we belonged somewhere and that we could do something with him which we enjoyed – it was magical.”

Dominic, who was named LDRL ‘Warrior of the Year’ at the 2022 Disability End of Season Awards, represented the Warriors on the pitch at St James’ Park at the recent Magic Weekend.

On what it means to Dominic to play for the Warriors, Maxine said: “It’s lovely so see the resilience and proudness of the players to wear the club badge.

“Even though it’s just for fun and it isn’t competitive, all they want to do is win because they’re representing Wigan Warriors.”
