Match report: Manly hold on to beat Roosters

In a Nutshell

Manly gave a tremendous defensive display to hold the Roosters to zero in an 8-0 victory in their clash at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium.

How it Unfolded

The Roosters were still missing the suspended Sonny Bill Williams, and they were generally outmuscled by the Sea Eagles, who took the lead through Jamie Lyon after 22 minutes when Jared Waarea-Hargreaves was penalised for a shoulder charge on Glenn Stewart.

Three minutes later they extended their lead when Cheyse Blair scored in the corner after good work by Steve Matai, although Lyon couldn’t convert.

The Roosters were on the wrong end of a big penalty count, and they could make little impression on the Sea Eagles’ defence until Daniel Tupou scored in the corner in the 73rd minutes. But the try was disallowed because of obstruction in the buildup.

The Sea Eagles had the final say when Lyon converted another penalty in the final minute of the game.
