AT just 23 years of age, Catalans Dragons fullback/halfback Arthur Mourgue has become one of the French club’s most consistent players.
With injury to Sam Tomkins plaguing the former England captain’s time out on the field in the past few seasons, Mourgue is now a regular for Steve McNamara either at number one or six/seven.
That being said, the diminutive French playmaker is out of contract at the end of the 2023 Super League season and the 23-year-old has admitted that there has been Super League interest in him.
However, Mourgue is eager to put pen to paper on a new deal at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.
“I want to stay, I think I am in the right place at a good club and I see my future in Perpignan so I want to stay,” Mourgue told League Express.
“I know that the club are keen too and although nothing is finalised I see my future here.
“My agent tells me there are a few Super League sides interested but because I think it’s the best option to stay here I am not too bothered about other noise.”
It’s fair to say that Mourgue has grabbed his opportunity with Tomkins enduring a number of difficult injuries in recent times, but the Frenchman has paid tribute to the former Wigan Warriors star for helping to develop his own game.
“It’s been really great working with Sam,” Mourgue continued.
“It’s a great opportunity as a player to evolve alongside someone like Sam that has won so many things. He’s a good man and he is always there if you need his help.”
Of course, whilst Tomkins will be hanging up his boots at the end of 2023, Mourgue will be determined to be the linchpin around whom Catalans head coach Steve McNamara bases his team.
