Rams Sign Five More New Players

18 September 2014 - 11:08 AM

By Oliver Roby and James Taylor

Dewsbury Rams are delighted to officially announce the arrival of five players ahead of the 2015 season. Dalton Grant, Ryan Fieldhouse, Josh Barlow, Sam Wood and Byron Smith will all be turning out in the Red, Amber and Black of Dewsbury next year.

Barrow Raiders winger Grant, signed on a 1-year-deal, has been a shining light in a disappointing season for the Cumbrians, crossing for 17 tries in 27 appearances despite their relegation - that tally includes a try in each clash with the Rams this year.

The 23-year-old, who stands at 6 foot tall and boasts an impressive turn of pace, began his professional career with Championship One outfit, South Wales Scorpions, scoring 32 tries in 45 appearances for the club, meanwhile he spent time on loan at Crusaders in 2011, making his Super League debut in a match against Hull KR.

Head coach Glenn Morrison said about Grant, "Dalton is one of the best wingers in the competition and is Super League standard. I am very excited about him coming on board."

Halifax full back Ryan Fieldhouse, who has signed on a 1-year-deal, also joins the club next year after a four year spell with 'Fax. The 26-year-old, who can also fill in at centre, was part of the squad which won the Northern Rail Cup in 2012 and he was voted as the 'Star Man' by fans in 2013.

The former Leigh East amateur has enjoyed a fine 2014 campaign, crossing for 16 tries in 24 appearances, including a score against Widnes in the Challenge Cup, helping him rack up a total of 53 tries in 84 appearances across four seasons with the West Yorkshire side.

"To me Ryan is the best full back in the competition. He is also a top try scorer in a top 4 team, which shows great quality. He is also safe in defence." Morrison commented.

Meanwhile, former Wigan Warriors youth player Josh Barlow joins from Swinton, also on a 1-year-deal. The 23-year-old, who offers great versatility in the forward pack, was called up to the Scotland squad for last Autumn's Rugby League World Cup and has also made 18 appearances for the Lions this year.

Morrison is looking forward to Barlow joining up with the squad "Josh is an experienced player and can play in 3 or 4 different positions. He is great to have in the squad."

Bradford Bulls loanee Sam Wood has also made a permanent switch to the club and has signed a 2-year-deal. The 20-year-old had enjoyed a solid start to his Dewsbury career, scoring four times in his first nine appearances while showing his versatility by stepping in at centre or wing when needed. The Halifax-born man made his Super League debut in a 26-20 defeat at the hand of Wigan in 2013, while he started in the centres as Bradford pulled off a shock 58-6 win over Huddersfield in September last year.

"Sam is a 20-year-old with Super League experience and is a talent of the future. We have signed him on a 2-year-deal and there is lots of potential " said Morrison.

Finally, Byron Smith has signed up from local rival Batley Bulldogs on a 1-year-deal. Smith, 30, has spent time with Castleford Tigers in Super League while he has represented Wales internationally. The front or back rower also picked up the Man of the Match award for the opposition in our 16-14 win over the Bulldogs last month and has been a consistent fixture in the starting line-up for Batley, making a total of 25 appearances for the Bulldogs as they achieved an 8th placed finish.

Glenn Morrison is excited to bring the front rower to Dewsbury "With Ewan Dowes retiring we needed a senior player to replace him with. He fits all of the attributes we need and is a leader alongside being a quality front-rower."
