I thought Bill Beaumont was a bit of a rugby league fan.

I seem to recall he watched the sport,at Fylde.

When the 9's tournament was played there.

Or,it may have been Blackpool Panthers.

He may even have made a presentation - but didn't want the information to go out.

My memory is good, ain't it?  Maybe not.

Tbf it was hosted at the RU club where he is president(?), although I did hear he follows RL. Keen Lancashire cricket fan, too.

How did my friends in Chorley, get season tickets then, they never told me they had to lie about where they lived.

Apologies, I was referring only to match tickets. Season tickets dived by year two when Whelan put the prices up. I worked there full-time for over a decade so funnily enough I do have half an idea of what I’m on about.

Reminds me of when they wouldn’t let Roy Keane buy a ticket for a Latics game so he said he’d have a season ticket.

Only at Wigan would Roy Keane get turned away.

He got turned away that day exactly as anybody else was as it was an all-ticket, database-only fixture.

You are saying anyone in Wigan Borough could buy a ticket but bordering postcodes BL, PR, M, WA etc couldn't?

Worse than that, in fact, as the likes of Lowton and Golborne and the more further afield Atherton, Astley and Tyldesley are within the borough but do not have WN postcodes. It was to prevent away fans buying in home areas for the local games.

The fly in the ointment being that Skelmersdale has a WN postcode and is obviously rife with Everton and Liverpool fans, and of course Leigh has a WN postcode but a minuscule number of Latics fans compared to Bolton and the Manchester clubs.

By the second season in the Premier League, there had been ample opportunity for any ‘new’ Latics fans to get themselves on the database in attending a lower category game and could then go to a ‘previous booking history’ only policy whenever an away end sold out as is commonplace in football.

The guy who told me was adamant, this was when latics where heading for the premiership and in it. The logic was that soccer supporters in the area saw it as a cheap way watch regular top soccer teams without paying top club prices. I know a couple of rugby followers who did just that even though they didn't ever support latics. Interestingly they both packed in after their first season declaring boring and a waste of money.

When Latics where in the premiership they managed to not sell out against United.

I should have added that I was working there at the time fwiw with that information at my fingertips. That first season in the Premier League, you were literally only allowed to buy tickets for half a dozen of the games if you had a WN postcode as the depth of their database simply didn’t exist.

You can take or leave this one as I'm not naming the source, but, a former Latics director told me that they sell more season tickets in WA (Warrington & St.Helens)  postcodes than in WN Wigan.

Yeah, that’s definitely not the case. Although they do have a healthy number of season ticket holders in St Helens, that is probably balanced out by WN8 alone in Skem (plus the WA figure would be skewed by Golborne being lumped in there)

There is very, very little crossover between the two, it must be said.

  6. With all respect @yipyee, I don’t think you are acknowledging the nature of Magic Weekend and the (perfectly plausible) habits of those attending. We need to be making the game as accessible as possible, not creating false barriers. If people don’t get a first taste of such events then they’ll just find something else to do.

There's enough evidence before our eyes that a 60,000 venue is too big.

40,000 would be ideal, looks better on TV,  create a great atmosphere.

Leicester have just been relegated,  could find hosting it appealing and King Power is a nice stadium,  and a good location for fans from all over.

Ever tried convincing your Mrs to have a weekend in Leicester?

Was talking about this last night. Fleetwood or Morecambe anyone?

Fleetwood is a hellhole and Morecambe not much better. Not sure the pitches would be big enough either (Fleetwood in particular).

Much as there’s a comment on the attendances thread that Magic only really works in Newcastle, the same argument very much applies to Blackpool and the Bash.

However, as @Jughead mentions above, I’d bring back the Northern Rail Cup with the final at Blackpool. Went to a good few of them (not just involving Leigh) and they were proper occasions.

The sooner Oldham get back playing in Oldham, the better.

Is it next season at BP ?

Too big of a club and too much History for them to be where they are. More than capable to get to SL with the right direction and clout.

They’re back in Oldham now (Avro FC) where they played previously in that division. It was only in the Championship that they played at Stalybridge.

Harry will the two proposed train stations in golborne and Culcheth come under Leigh or be added to Warrington's ever growing list

Golborne is in the conveniently re-drawn Leigh constituency so that’ll tick the box even though it’s going to be next to useless for most of the actual town of Leigh. There again, I’ve got a train to London today in 1 hr 55 mins from Wigan. The only problem being it took 1 hr 10 mins to drive the 6.5 miles from home to Wigan 🤦🏻‍♂️

Yeah, they’re certainly felt more atmospheric but I wonder how much was down to size of venue. Rochdale, Bristol, Workington, Neath and Hull KR were all sub 12,000 capacity whereas 13 venues this time around were 20,000+. I wonder if crowds were simply lost in bigger venues*.

*Not that I’m knocking the ambition to fill bigger venues.

I think there was certainly a novelty in those smaller towns getting the chance to host a World Cup game. Ireland v Fiji at Rochdale in particular was fantastic. Cook Islands v Tonga getting 10k at Leigh when up against Bonfire Night. Halifax rocking for the Tonga v Italy game. The support for the Samoans v NZ at Warrington.

Tonga v PNG at Saints was decent and the final was great but so many of the others just seemed to be non-events, not helped by the repeat games.

    Hmmm..yes, no, maybe.

I'm not particularly keen on Midlands either but I might sub-consciously be less keen on Birmingham. Nothing against the city but, as a Yorkie living in Coventry, it was easy to acquire (?) a passion for the Bears whereas I have no links whatsoever to Birmingham. I want to get to Coventry Bears games next season but Hurricanes games will take precedence as the ongoing League 1 presence. If some time in the future it were a choce between Coventry and Birmingham teams....maybe my heart would take me to the Cov game. Dunno.

The original vision was that Midlands Hurricanes would sit at the top of a virtual pyramid that included community / L1-aspiring teams from Derby, Nottingham, Stoke etc so there was hope (if only by me) that people would come from far and wide.

Supporters generally refer to the club as Hurricanes anyway so it may be that 'Midlands' fades from use eventually.

     Come on you Canes!

The potential of a sponsorship deal with Norton Canes services is there for all to see

Yes. As one off games maybe, in January or whatever.

We aren't talking Leeds v Chelsea in the 80's here but I think a day on the beer in (potentially) the sun may bring out one or two idiots.  Hopefully I'm wrong.

Just to clarify, I aren't talking about just rivalry here. Halifax for instance, many of their fans dislike Bradford as a team but that's where it stays, on the pitch. I'm talking about hating someone or something, like really. But let's forget it, I don't want to overdo it. Probably FA will happen.

They were literally in the same division

My opinion is just that,as valid as anyone else's. Why would I  "visit" the "gaff"?, I don't go to retail parks, industrial parks,  Mcdonalds, Nandos,Leisure centres, generic carveries, bowling alleys, etc just to marvel at their design features, eat microwaved food, and drink insipid alcoholic beverages brewed in the millions of gallons by the mega brewing concerns. If that is what you want fine but it is not for me.

You’ve somehow covered pretty much every base of entertainment and still it’s not yet enough until they build a spit and sawdust working men’s club on the car park? And I say that as someone who takes great pride in basing away games around arriving in the local town at 11am and not leaving before 6pm
