  1. Don't disagree with any of that. There are some exceptions in UK sport, of course, but Arsenal, Aston Villa etc. have 100+ years history behind them.

As for the hundred, city names like Northern, Southern, Oval, Trent & Welsh? Don't see those on my map 🙂  If anything, that's an argument for non-geographic names (like Arsenal, Harlequins or whatever). Calling the Northwest hundred team Manchester immediately cut their potential supporter base in half, AFAICT.

Can someone explain how this hypothetical buyout would even work?

It's a throwaway quote, with zero thought behind it, but I could imagine the NRL approaching the SL chairmen with an offer to buy the SL Europe competition. Or in a semi-hostile takeover, I suspect they could buy the six or seven weakest clubs from their owners relatively inexpensively and vote through whatever changes they wanted.

Yeah I get that, I still think Manchester and Liverpool offer the Lancastrian clubs opportunities too like Leeds, Catalans, and London, and perhaps also Bolton with Leigh as you describe.

Seems highly unlikely to me that people in Liverpool would ever support a team from St. Helens.

We have a couple of teams in Manchester and their problem is that they don't have much latent support - Salford getting to the GF hasn't impacted their crowds in any meaningful way. And of course we already have a big occasion there each year. There needs to be a proper strategy for RL in Manchester, but Salford playing a game in a larger venue probably isn't part of it. I could imagine Warrington drawing some support from Irlam, Altrincham commuter belt kind of area, but even that is a stretch.

Not questioning about the money. Once that was gone the inevitable happened. My question though what has happened to all their players with academy / reserves / championship experience from say last season and further into the past?

Off the top of my head, almost all got picked up by other clubs at the end of last season.

Jack Johnson - now at Oldham

Markus Walker - now at Dewsbury

    Alex Clegg - ???

Alex Donaghy - now at York

Nikau Williams - now at York

Jay Chapelhow - now at Oldham

Curtis Davies - now at Dewsbury

Connor Bailey - now at York

Denive Balmforth - now at Hull

Ted Chapelhow - now at Oldham

Rob Tuliatu - at Avignon I think

    Gideon Boafo - London B

    Max Flanagan - Rochdale

    Mac Walsh - Hunslet

    Jack Miller - Keighley

Equally, I think there is value for any club in getting a large amount of latent support to 1 big game a year. Only 4 max can make a final each year, for the rest a big event crowd can be years away.

I think this is a good point - although perhaps that maps best to a club like Leeds or Catalans (or dare I say London Broncos) where you have a much bigger stadium on your doorstep and perhaps some actual latent support that might turn up. Leigh trying to tap into Bolton might be interesting.

Generally, when we have done on the road fixtures, there's been no real point to it, or any attempt to follow up. There is no value in randomly playing a Hull game in Middlesbrough or wherever.

I could make the argument for say Warrington playing in Chester, North Wales, Macclesfield etc. but it would only work as part of a multi-year strategy to become a regional team and to get kids outside of Warrington & Halton playing, free travel from those places to certain home games and so on. And all of those things would cost money.

Do you think the NRL would be as successful here?

How did the Brisbane Broncos takeover of London go? Not as well as they thought?

There have been plenty of administrators and officials who've worked in both SL and the NRL too.

Shane Richardson was Souths CEO for over a decade, also Cronulla & Penrith & now at Wests I believe. He was NRL Head of Strategy (and on the RFL board at one point). His attempt at expanding UK RL by setting up Gateshead ended up with them being merged into Hull FC.

Blake Solly went to boarding school in NSW before coming here and ending up as the SL General Manager before going back home to become CEO of the club he supported as a child - Souths.

Until it turned out that they'd spent £30m on an app that didn't work, I did say the Australian sport the RFL could learn the most from would be soccer.

Except soccer in Australia is far bigger than RL is in the UK and has all kinds of marketing advantages that RL doesn't have.

If you're picking an Australian sport which seems to have been well run for decades, AFL would be the one to go for, although RL has done a far better job of international expansion on a fraction of the income. And maybe the fact that AFL gets essentially zero coverage here means that whatever things they mess up go unnoticed.

  8. Would've been a complete non-starter up until last year, as most NRL players wouldn't have got a working visa to come here. But the RFL got the home office to change the rules for 2024, so that anyone under 24 who has played in NRL, NSW or Qld Cup can come here now. So now it's just the small matter of non-availability of certain stadia, the likely loss of tv contracts due to overlap with soccer etc. that would be in the way. That plus whenever Aussies have tried to run clubs here, it's always ended badly.

  9. I did parkrun in California a couple of weeks back, quite an attractive bayside location in silicon valley, on part of a 15+ mile long cycling/ walking/ running trail. Mostly British & Australian volunteers, and tourists from UK, Australia & Canada, but a nice friendly feel with a monthly post run picnic and plenty of silicon valley 'locals'.

This is a very British mindset.

It really, really isn't. It's pretty much universal. Just about every other international sport has neutral officials - football, cricket, rugby union, events in the Olympic Games.

Maldives Football flies in a referee from India or Sri Lanka for big games because every referee they have is an ex-player of one of the small number of clubs they have.

UFC boxing and NFL all added layers of protection to the athlete, albeit not as much in UFC.

Amateur boxing head guards mandatory. Only 3 rounds so fatigue less of a factor (when most injuries occur). Big gloves.

NFL starting to remove head contacts and now horse collar tackles which can lead to whiplash. Helmets and pads including 7 point lower pads provide enough protection to keep the aggression levels high

NFL has already paid out around a billion dollars in compensation related to concussion and head injuries, with more to come.
