The current fanbase for women's RL just isn't large enough to independently sustain full-time professional competitions.

But as we have discussed previously that depends on how you value the externalities of having a women`s competition.

It might even be argued that the sizeable increase in crowds and broadcast numbers is at least partly driven by the positive publicity and increased reach of the NRL due to the advent and success of the women`s game.

It`s certainly led to a change in tone in the way League is discussed by our national broadcaster. It`s not so easy to generalise that League is a game only played by knuckle dragging thugs when you have a women`s competition full of lovely presentable young ladies.

Its been great to have so much RL on Sky this weekend. Could a dedicated channel come?

We have 5 main top tier sporting packages: Super League, Womens Super League, NRL, Challenge Cup and Internationals. Up to 6 Super League games a week, plus up to 8 NRL. There's also the Championship, League 1 and other lower tier comps in France and Australia potentially.

Could some, if not all of these be the basis of a dedicated channel like SS Cricket/Football/Golf/F1?

If the audience is worth it I'd hope it was something that could be considered.

Not to mention the NRLW and Papua New Guinea`s Digicel Cup, both of which are of excellent quality as well.

Didn’t the AFL attract 80k to the season opener & continue to dwarf NRL attendances ?

Overall they average about 32 000, which mind you has been on the decline for about 10 years, and we are getting up towards 16 000. HST, the extra ~150k they get in crowds per round is dwarfed by the extra 100 000+ we get in viewers per match.

All sports except the poor A-League (soccer) and union have experienced a significant crowd bump this year, I seriously think people are finally shaking off the covid shackles and getting out, that`s why I was so keen to see the viewing numbers because that showed who is getting the real rise.

The guy has come from union, give him a break. He’s still trying to adapt to the nuances and subtleties of rugby league

Last year everyone was criticising him saying he either couldn`t or doesn`t pass, he seems to have turned that around pretty quick, proving himself now to be a pretty deadly link player.

I think Miller is obviously smart enough to address this particular short coming in his game as well.

It's definitely aiming for that American feel.

Warren Smith referred to an ''exclamation point'' in commentary on Thursday, as opposed to the correct British and Australian English terminology of an ''exclamation mark''.

I suppose so much of the world is becoming evermore Americanised...

Ironic isn`t it, what with America on the decline, or at least past its` best, I`m hearing so many of our immigrants - who in the past would have spoken that beautiful English you get when taught by people who actually speak proper English - now speaking with a faint American twang, it`s awful.

I`ve heard worse than your example though, Ruan Simms was using that awful Americanism "off of " the other night, she must somehow think it`s cool.

No doubt there is a real positive vibe surrounding the game at the moment that is reflected in positive after positive headline about the game. My youngest is in third year med, he`s been to house parties recently where groups of young fellow med students have commandeered the loungeroom and put the League on. I just can`t imagine that happening not that many years ago.

Fascinatingly, St G Dragons player Moses Suli was asked by the press about the news of Viliami Fifita signing to join the Dragons next year. His response:

”We got the same manager, my manager let me know he was looking to come here. From what my manager said, he didn’t want to come, he loved it over the at Manly”.

”I was in the same situation as well, I didn’t want to come here, but I’ve got to do what is best for me and what’s best for my footy and he’s coming to do the same thing so hopefully he comes and has a crack and hope he does well”.

Imagine how proud the Dragons supporters are. Lucky devils 😂

I`d say hearsay should be inadmissible, even in the court of public opinion. And as for taking the word of a player manager, unreliable at best.

Mybe: jack of all trades, master of none.

This is just what has been muted for a while. If it transpires then get Fiji and PNG to tour the UK. It would be great to have some variety anyway.

Unfortunate timing for this announcement what with the Sua`alii nonsense, just makes us look tin pot.

If the bloody thing had of been on the calendar six months ago then possibly we wouldn`t be having other conversations. Very poor.

Having said that very tempting to get over to N.Z. for what would be an absolutely cracking day.

But what about Gold Coast Titans, I think they'll block any Ipswich club.

Just a question on Easts Tigers, what is their catchment area and where is their support base?

I can`t imagine Hatcher would be pushing them if he thought they were going to be a problem for another Qld. side.

As far as @Anita Bath`s point about a stadium. I think there was a promise about a 15- 20k seater in Ipswich if they got entry.

Easts Tigers are an inner city club, I gather they would be like what The Roosters and Souths are and hence the apprehension about bringing them where they are. Especially since I believe the long-term vision is that we now try to concentrate on teams based out of cities or certainly places that have their own large potential catchments, for eg. Perth, NZ2, P.N.G., Adelaide. That certainly makes sense.

Ipswich can do that looking west, Brisbane Easts would be encroaching too much on the Broncos` turf under that scenario.

I didn’t  expect Hynes to make that drastic an impact in game 1. Then again it is the Dragons. Reserving my massive enthusiasm 😂 sorry, not sorry  @The Rocket

And I thought this was going to be an acknowledgment that I was right about Newcastle and you were wrong. 😇

p.s. turned the Saint`s game off after 20 minutes, watched the replay of the Warriors game, much, much more enjoyable.

Question: Would another team in Ipswich/Logan territory dent the support of Gold Coast Titans?

Checking Google that catchment area is quiet near the Gold Coast. I can see why the Titans would kick up a fuss about a team in that area starting up

Peter Hatcher QRL boss interviewed in yesterday`s The Australian says definitely the next team should come out of Perth, then Ipswich, with Ipswich city itself being an eastern boundary and their catchment then being that western corridor that extends through to Toowoomba and beyond. There`s a lot of people in south-east Qld and sticking to roughly those areas leaves plenty of room for everyone.

Say what you like about Hatcher but they run a good comp up there and introduced the P.N.G. Hunters when the Fijian Silktails were still a twinkle in the NSWRL`s eye. The QRL are making plans to have a Pacific Trieze side enter their competition in the next few years as well.

Interesting though, no mention of Brisbane Easts Tigers, bid name FireHawks, who are both wealthy and strong in juniors.

Now AFL cant benefit so easily from the 2nd Brisbane club vacuum. Less news territory for them to have.

Some people saying the Loins` corporates have taken a hit at tonight`s game as well. The Dolphins are back at Suncorp in three weeks time against Souths, that could be 40k + as well.

the Gabba. It’s a nice stadium but when the Brazilian soccer fans started to jump up and down at the Olympic soccer match I attended there, I could clearly see the upper stands bend and flex.

You might say (or even sing) " Lights go out, walls come tumbling down".

And would you believe it the top AFL game of the week is Brisbane Lions v Melbourne Demons, being played at the Gabba at the same time.

So folks cannot attend, or even watch on TV both games.

    Brisbane traffic chaos tomorrow night!

You would not even know the fumbleball game is on, the notoriously pro-fumbleball and anti-League National Broadcaster, the ABC ran an extended story on the game in last night`s news vox popping people on the streets of Brisbane, it was gold, even the usually snooty nosed ABC were calling it the Battle of Brisbane.

O’Brien is the coaching version of Valium. I can’t imagine there is a coach out there more depressing than him. The club is an absolute shambles.

I think Kayln Ponga is very immature and that he was handed the captaincy tells me that his manager has the club by the balls. Ponga isn’t a captain’s bootlace, let alone a leader good enough to bring the Knights out of the doldrums.

Young will be a much better player for leaving the Knights, as would almost all of them. He has lots of talent and I expect he will prove himself a star upon his arrival at the Roosters.

I don`t agree, they were in with a real chance last week and apart from Hastings going off and a couple blunders from Tyson Gamble at the death they could have won that game. The team is still playing with plenty of heart.

Couple of things, Miller is still finding his way at fullback, but we saw last week how good he might become. As a runner with the ball, as a link player and as a general threat, his energy levels are off the chart. Last year I thought the Dolphins should have gone after him. He keeps playing like that and they get Ponga back, with Hastings at half-back will make a real difference.

BTW. When are teams going to start to protect their halves, especially vulnerable blokes like Ponga. Certainly not having them make tackles from the kick-off.

Bradmen Best seemed to be having a go at the weekend and it`s about time and Gagai is still a top draw player. I thought everyone was a bit tough on Young, he dropped a couple of balls but was still running very hard with the ball, he`ll be alright once he gets back in. He will not want to have a reputation of being a slacker waiting for next year. In the meantime they have Greg Marzhew, watch him go this weekend, he`s good. That Croker bloke is back from injury now and he`s a top shelf young forward, no coincidence that Bennett went after him hard for the Dolphins.

Better times ahead for the Knights.

That is an incredibly tough question.

I think battles or disasters would be hard to look beyond for events in history to witness. Most other things I fear would underwhelm! What do you think?

I suppose the natural succesor to that question is which historical figure would you most like to have a coversation with and/or go for a pint with?

Those accounts of armies of 200 000 + basically fighting hand to hand during the Persian invasions of Greece used to blow my mind. Caesar`s siege of Alesia would have been incredibly dramatic as well.

Some of those ancient sea battles with the triremes, like the battle of Salamis, would be hard to beat as well.

Characters to meet: any of the great explorers would be fascinating, people who saw the world as it had existed for thousands and thousands of years before we spoilt it.

Heard that TTR is starting a new tag league in Brighton this year.

More Southerners playing a form of RL (TTR is affiliated to the RFL) can only be a good thing.

Where I live up here on the mid-north coast of N.S.W., our group (Group 3) was considered a leader in introducing League Tag for the women, ironically, they`re having a hard time getting numbers for some of the clubs this year, because now that they`ve introduced a tackle comp all the girls in the League Tag teams want to play tackle.

The Group president was on the news recently calling out for girls for the League Tag, what it does show though, it does appear to be a pathway through to the tackle game and apart from the engagement with the sport as a whole angle, that`s what ultimately would be ideal.
