  • Bibby: “I always set myself the target of having no tries on my edge, and I feel that those plays meant a lot to the entire team.”

After making two sensational try-saving tackles against Wakefield Trinity on Friday night, Jake Bibby has spoke of the pride he has for the defensive part of his personal game.

The boyhood Wigan fan returned to the Warriors side and started on the right wing in the 28-16 win at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Bibby was pleased with his own performance: “I pride myself on defence. I always set myself the target of having no tries on my edge, and I feel that those plays meant a lot to the entire team.

“It is a desperation thing, of not conceding and wanting to win because those tackles can make or break a game, but it was all down the performances of the lads.”

Despite Wakefield having a reduced number of players to choose from, Bibby felt the task was not made any easier for the Warriors.

“It can mess with your mind sometimes, as you’ll think it’s going to be an easy game, but you can’t let yourself get into that mentally. You need to put your foot to the pedal. People thought we were going to railroad them, but one of their best sides turned up and put a good performance in.

“They gave us a good game, and credit to us because we were 0-12 down before we turned it around to get a good win. We spoke about the Hull KR game beforehand and didn’t want to be in that position or lower our standards again.”

Although Bibby’s usual position is centre, he was more than happy to start Friday’s game out wide on the right edge.

“It’s not my preferred position, but if I am needed there then I can do the job as I did it for Salford when I was younger. I’ll go wherever in the team because we all have the same goal of wanting some silverware.”

With a short turnaround of games fast approaching, which includes the Coral Challenge Cup Semi Final against Leeds Rhinos on Saturday, the 24-year-old stressed the importance of keeping momentum going.

“That win puts us in good stead and gave us a good run out which will make us better. It has done a lot for the team, but for myself I want to put my best foot forward and be in contention.”

Prior to the Cup tie against Leeds, the Warriors have a derby against St Helens in Round 14 of the Betfred Super League at the AJ Bell Stadium on Tuesday night (K.O. 7:45pm) to contend with.

With a youthful squad named by boss Lam, Bibby is excited by what his younger teammates can do.

“I want to lead the way and show my experience, hopefully they can follow. They are good lads, and some have represented England and Lancashire at youth level, and they know what it’s all about.

“What a game to come in for them to make their debut – it’s a big occasion for hometown lads coming in. It would be better with fans there, but we know they’ll be watching, so we will put a good shift in.”
