Olympic Games: Paris 2024
tiffers replied to Futtocks's topic in Any Other Business / Any Other Sports
A beautiful day for it... The weather looks absolutely abysmal which cannot help it either. It has been pretty rubbish... -
You don't necessarily have to rewind the game. At the moment, the game barely acknowledges there has been an incident even if there is concrete evidence there has. So the guilty team massively benefits from a team of 13 all game and no penalty provided. By allowing a retrospective card, you at least provide the guilty team with an in game punishment. It's by no means perfect, no scenario is when you miss the incident.

I think you have to carry on the game and accept it's an imperfect scenario what ever happens if you miss the incident in the moment. Option 1: you miss the incident and let the player continue as we have tonight. Option 2: let play continue and make a card decision at the next pause in play. I.e. the decision is no card, yellow or red. But without regressing back to the incident and continue the game from where you are. Clearly still some injustice but the player is off for the game and is punished in game. Option 3: pause the game deal with the incident as it was at the time. The 3rd option been my least preferred.

Not a huge surprise to see Aus as the sole host with a bit of PNG. Reserving judgement until we get a few more details on locations, stadiums, pricing strategies etc.

Thanks Martyn. I would agree with you. That format makes a lot more sense to me as it provides interest for fans of clubs that are starting to drop away from the league/play-off race. It brings a totally different feel to the games being played and would be refreshing to have something else to focus on during the second half of the year. Depending on how it works I can see space for another competition i.e. the challenge cup remains at the 1st half and then bring something else in for the 2nd half of the year. Either way, you then build towards a crescendo of finals but without having to manipulate the league season with a gimmick (aka the 8's concept) that erodes our credibility and avoids all of the jeopardy that brought. If we are going to stick with a fixture list that means we need loop-type fixtures, then at least this brings a legitimate reason for having teams playing one another 4 times a year!

I think a bigger league would be more interesting. It breaks up the need for loop fixtures which I do wonder if they erode our longer term fan interest with fans saying "not that team again... we only played them 3 weeks ago". I think there must be something in having another competition / approach that would generate a different angle and discussion point for the sport.

The hope definitely does kill you! It's a good point about whoever is top of the league / performing better than expected will probably be engaged more. I suspect thats true for some.

Does anyone else seem to get the mid-season blues? The year kicks off with excitement, hope and feelings of good will. Who will live up to expectations, who will be lacking, will "x" team stay up etc. It's all exciting to see the new players coming in after a few months away. Then about now, we've had the cup final, we've still got a long way to go before the play-offs and were on this merry-go-round of playing the same teams sometimes three or even four times. I find myself consuming less of it, i.e. at the beginning of the year I was watching most games on TV, last weekend I saw just one. I then tend to find myself watching more as the season approaches playoff time. Is anyone else the same? It got me thinking just how others do this. the NRL has SoO, Cricket has multiple formats to break up the season, Football has numerous cups and international breaks. So, should RL be considering breaking up the season with 'something else'? The international break didn't seem to offer up much as a single event. The new cup format doesn't fundamentally change the league season from what I can see.

GB to replace England?
tiffers replied to Gerrumonside ref's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
Safe to say I have complete apathy towards this given the sheer lack of focus / strategy or prioritisation of international RL. Until we get a calendar that people can invest and trust in then its all just moving deckchairs around. A few years back I would've jumped at the thought of GB touring Aus on an ashes tour. I'd of been desperate to go. I'd be passionately discussing what we need to do as a game, the pluses and minuses of both options. Right now, I feel despondent. I can't trust that the tour will actually happen as I can't buy tickets, no venues are confirmed, no tangible commitment has been made other than the RFL/NRL/IRL announcing it will happen. The likelihood of cancellation for one reason or another is still very high in my opinion. All of the above means its just not on my radar as a concept to buy into. Does it matter if we tour as GB or England? Right at this moment it feels like a very low priority vs. getting the international game back on its feet and just delivering the basics. Give us a confirmed venue list alongside the teams playing and give us the opportunity to buy into the idea early. That's how you drive excitement and get the public to come with you. This is where the difference comes with other sports and or entertainment opportunities, they are more likely to get my £££'s if I know I am buying into something with confidence it will deliver.
