Test for strong Dons squad

Gary Thornton is ready to welcome back more names to his already competitive squad.

The Dons boss looks set to have Makali Aizue, Mark Castle and Jordie Hedges available for the first time in 2017 against Hull FC on Sunday, although Mason Tonks remains on the side-lines with a recurring back injury.

The Super League giants provide the third and final test of pre-season at the Keepmoat Stadium before the competitive action gets underway.

The Black and Whites are expected to field a strong side against the Dons as they themselves prepare for another long year, and Thornton expects his side to stand up to the test.

“We know they’re going to bring a team full of good players so it’ll be a big task for us, but were looking forward to it,” he said.

“The games we’ve had so far have all shown good signs in different phases, generally I’m pleased with where we’re at.”

With a 10 per cent% win ratio in pre-season so far, the Dons are a side on the up and look ready to begin competitive action in League One, but the head-coach is keen to take each game as it comes.

“We’re under no illusions it’s going to be a tough year, but we’ve got a good squad of players that I believe are up to it,” Thornton added.

“There are some good sides in League One this year, you only have to look at Toronto and the teams that came down from the Championship.

“Hopefully a solid performance against Hull FC will stand us in good stead for the start of the season.”
