REACTION | Positives to take for Welham

Welham opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour against Keighley at Cougar Park but 26 second half points from the home side saw the score-line drift away from Gary Thornton’s side.

That try was his first of 2017, something which the centre is looking to build on when the league season gets underway.

“Obviously it was pleasing personally to get my first try of the year, it’s nice to get it early on rather than it taking a few games as is sometimes the case,” he said.

“I thought we did well first half, we managed to get our noses in front and looking at it we probably could have had a couple more scores but they were more clinical than us.

“Fair play to Keighley, they took advantage when we were down to 12 with the sin bins and we couldn’t quite get back into it after that. We came close but didn’t quite manage it.”

With competitive games now coming thick and fast, Welham is confident that the Dons can hit back and go on a run of picking up positive results, starting with the Challenge Cup tie against Myton Warriors.

“The loss at Keighley hurt us, but we know where we went wrong and that’s something we’ll be looking to improve against Myton. They’re a well drilled side but we know where we can get at them,” he added.

“Our attacking play has been good in spells over the course or pre-season, so for us it’s about being more consistent. If we do that then we know the points will flow and we’ll win more games than we lose.

“We’ve got a good squad now ready for a strong season, it’s important that one defeat doesn’t affect us too much and that we get back to winning ways against Myton and start what we hope will be a good cup run.”
