Challenge Cup third round.

Attendance | 366

The Dons progressed to the fourth round of the Challenge Cup after a convincing win over Myton Warriors at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Head coach Gary Thornton made a number of changes from the defeat at Keighley, with Tom Carr, Aaron Jones-Bishop and Chris Heil all coming into the squad and crossing the try-line in the first competitive home game of 2017.

The amateur side looked to cause an upset from the off and took the lead inside two minutes, a neat kick through was grounded by Nathan Slater just inside the field of play to put Myton in front. Ash James added the two from in front of the sticks. 0-6.

The Dons hit back immediately. After an initial break from Louis Sheriff, the attack continued to flow and Kieran Cross found space close to the line to cross. Tom Carr levelled up the scores with the conversion.

It wasn’t long before Gary Thornton’s side were in front, a couple of sets close to the Myton line created pressure and Jason Tali collected the ball 15 metres out before powering his way over. Carr was once again on the mark adding the extras to make the score 12-6.

After a quarter of an hour the Dons were in again, Cross threw a superb dummy before playing in Chris Heil for his first try of 2017. Carr continued his 100% kicking success to put the home side 18-6 up.

Aaron Jones-Bishop was the next man to get on the score-sheet, some slick handling from the Dons played the winger in down the left and he finished acrobatically in the corner.

After a quiet opening to the second half, the Dons eventually crossed after a earning a repeat set. Liam Welham was the man to profit, spotting a gap in the defensive line to burst through and go over. Carr’s conversion made it 28-6.

Carr was then in for a try of his own as the game edged into the final quarter. The full back collected the ball and squeezed over the line under pressure from two Myton defenders before converting his four-pointer to make the score-line 34-6 to the Dons.

The Dons pressed forward looking for more points as  Carr made a great run before playing a grubber kick through that almost found Jones-Bishop but the ball had just too much on it.

Moments later, Mike Worrincy thought he was in for a debut try after powering through the line, but the referee called play back for an alleged forward pass in the build-up.
