Richard Horne praised his side's defence after they kept Newcastle Thunder scoreless in the 34-0 win at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The Dons booked their place in the Challenge Cup fifth round with a comfortable victory, and the head coached picked out their defence as a key aspect of the performance.

He said: "To not concede any points is great for us, we spoke about making teams work harder to get down our end of the pitch. The second half was much better with the ball and we managed to cut down on the errors.

"The defence is something we've worked on a lot mainly because of the conditions we've had to deal with throughout pre-season, hopefully we can continue to work on it and improve every week.

"There were a few players who came in and made a good impression, we need the squad to chip in at times over the season so the players who played have made it into a tough call on who is in the team next week."

The Dons face Newcastle in Betfred League One on Sunday March 25, and Horne is expecting a much different encounter when they meet next time around.

He added: "They won't be happy with their performance, but they had a lot of players missing so that probably explains why it didn't quite happen for them and we're expecting a different game at their place.

"They will see areas where they can improve and when they get players back they will be stronger, we will try and play our game but we know we can mix it up at times as well.

"We've got options to look at on where we can get at them given what we've seen in this game, but they will have seen bits where they think they could get at us as well so we have to deal with that."

The Dons return to the Keepmoat Stadium on Friday March 30 to take on York City Knights, you can purchase tickets from the Club Doncaster Box Office, on 01302 762576 or at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk
