  • Lam: “It’s great to be back in a routine again and the players have trained really well.”

Revealing there is a ‘buzz’ in the air at training, Warriors boss Adrian Lam says his side have been focusing on themselves this week ahead of Sunday’s restart fixture against Wakefield.

Wigan will return to Betfred Super League action for the first time in nearly five months this weekend as they face Trinity at Emerald Headingley Stadium in Leeds.

And Lam says the excitement is building, despite admitting the difficulty to prepare to play against an opposition side in such unprecedented circumstances – where there have been no games for the past 20 weeks – due to Covid-19.

Speaking at Wednesday’s virtual press conference, via Zoom, at Robin Park Arena, he said: “This week has been about us.

“It’s always difficult to play against an opposition where you don’t know who is going to play or you haven’t seen the week before.

“We feel if we make sure we’re right and we can handle the tough moments and be resilient through the games, we’ll be okay.

“There’s a buzz in the air because they know it’s gameweek again.”

With it being the third week back at Robin Park Arena, the Head Coach praised his team for the way they have trained – alluding to skipper Sean O’Loughlin as a prime example.

“It’s great to be back in a routine again and the players have trained really well. I know they are all happy to be back and to be doing what they love.

“Sean O’Loughlin was our best trainer last week – he’s had a five-month break but he looks like he’s back in his 20s.

“Part of the secret to success this year is your recovery and the size of your squad. It will all come into play quite heavily at some point. We’re prepared and are treating everyone the same – nearly our whole squad will get an opportunity to play. We’re excited about it.

“We’re in a good position, we’ve just got keep working hard now to see out the rounds.”

Lam also gave an update on injuries and doubts ahead of Sunday, stating: “Oliver Gildart (shoulder) and Tony Clubb (neck) aren’t quite right.

“Ollie Partington has got a three-match suspension (Grade D ‘dangerous contact’ vs Hull KR in March) and Ben Flower has a one-week suspension (Grade C ‘dangerous contact’ vs Hull KR in March).

“They’re four important people that we won’t have available this week, so we have to make sure we power on.”
