A lifelong Wigan Warriors fan is set to embark on a 145-mile challenge on Thursday as he plans to run for 12 consecutive days to raise funds for MND Association and Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow.

Runner, Martyn Clarke, 46, from Marus Bridge, Wigan, was inspired by Kevin Sinfield’s 7 in 7 marathon challenge and decided to take on his own endurance test of 12 miles per day for 12 days, with all proceeds going to the Motor Neurone Disease charity and Burrow, who was diagnosed with the disease last December.

In the first 30 hours of Martyn’s Just Giving page going live, £600 has been raised, which is over 400% more than his £150 initial target.

The Warriors season ticket holder of 38 years will start his first ‘ultra’ run attempt on Thursday at 5:30pm as he aims to run 12 miles per day until 22nd December around the Wigan borough.

The former Wigan St Judes ARLFC player and Orrell St James ARLFC coach said: “I’ve done cray things in the past. I ran the New York Marathon in 2001, the London Marathon twice and the Ironman in Bolton. I did a half marathon last Saturday and I saw what Kevin did and it just inspired me. I thought to myself, ‘why not’.

“My mum died of cancer ten years ago and I raised money for cancer research. These things play in your mind and I’m now proud to be raising money for MND Association and Rob Burrow. He is a true legend.

“It’s great to see the whole Rugby League community coming together to help one of its best and most inspiring players. I’m really proud to be playing a part in that.

“I’m really excited to do it. Bring it on.”
