A Wigan Warriors fan has raised £5,700 for MND Association and Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow after running 12 miles every day for 12 consecutive days.

Season ticket holder Martyn Clarke finished his 12 for 12 challenge on Monday after running over 145 miles around the Wigan borough since 10th December.

The 46-year-old runner, from Marus Bridge, Wigan, was inspired by Kevin Sinfield’s 7 in 7 marathon challenge and decided to take on his own endurance test, with all proceeds going to the Motor Neurone Disease charity and Burrow, who was diagnosed with the disease last December.

Over £5,700 has now been raised on Martyn’s Just Giving page, smashing his initial target of £150.

Martyn said: “The support from the whole Rugby League community has been amazing.

“Wigan Warriors have been brilliant and people like Barrie McDermott, Ollie Partington, Dion Dublin, Paul Sculthorpe and Rob Burrow himself have all got involved on social media, which has been great to see.

“It turned into more than I thought it would do. It’s snowballed through the power of Twitter and social media. This is the most I’ve ever raised in my life. I’ve done a few other runs previously but this has been outstanding.

“To motivate myself every morning I thought of Rob. He was my motivation.

“I’m not an ultra runner – I’ve had to rely on the mental toughness to get me through it. I’ve learned a lot of lessons – no matter how much pain you are in, you’ve got to grit your teeth, bite down and crack on.”
