Rhinos - Storm : un avant-goût de Coupe du monde

Super League, NRL : qui est le plus fort ? Réponse ce soir, sur les coups de 23 h, après que les Leeds Rhinos et les Melbourne Storm en auront terminé avec le World Club Challenge. Un championnat du monde des clubs qui va bien au-delà du simple match entre le roi d'Angleterre et son homologue australien. Question de reconnaissance, de suprématie. L'occasion aussi de marquer le territoire à quelques tenus de la Coupe du Monde. Une compétition en passe de s'offrir un sérieux lifting en 2014. Avec la perspective alléchante d'un tournoi à six clubs (les trois premiers de chaque championnat), ne donnant que plus d'éclat à un trophée prisé. Mais aussi un intérêt supplémentaire, autre que l'attribution des places pour les play-off, aux championnats domestiques. Un chant du cygne, en somme, qu'un stade Headingley à guichets fermés espère en forme d'apothéose.
Sinfield veut prouver Catapulté capitaine du XIII d'Angleterre, Kevin Sinfield s'est vu confier la mission de mener tout un pays au sacre planétaire à l'automne prochain. Mais en attendant la 'World Cup', c'est la crédibilité du meneur de jeu des Rhinos qui est en jeu face au Storm. Lui, le premier Anglais à décrocher le 'Golden Boot' (titre de meilleur joueur de l'année) au mois de décembre dernier, depuis un certain Andy Farrell (2004). Et qui provoquait par la même occasion le courroux des Aussies, qui n'en voudraient même pas en NRL.
Widdop comme chez lui
Un test grandeur nature, donc, pour Captain Sinfield, face à un Storm articulé autour de l'axe des Kangourous : Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk, Cameron Smith... Mais aussi Gareth Widdop. Le demi d'ouverture anglais de Melbourne, né à Halifax, détesté ce soir et adulé demain, tentera comme en 2010 (victoire du Storm 18-10) de ramener aux antipodes un trophée qui a élu Headingley pour domicile l'an dernier, quand les Rhinos faisaient mettre un genou à terre à Manly (26-12). Melbourne Storm L'assistant-coach des Storm de Melbourne, Kevin Walters, passé pendant deux saisons par la case Dragons (2009-2010), entend bien prendre sa revanche ce soir sur les Leeds Rhinos.
Kevin, les Storm sont-ils prêts ?
J'avais oublié que le mois de février pouvait être froid et neigeux. Ça ne va pas nous avantager, c'est certain. Mais on s'appuie quand même sur 12 joueurs qui ont fait la dernière finale. Nos meneurs devront tirer le groupe vers le haut .
Que pensez-vous de cette équipe de Leeds ?
Depuis deux ans, ils ont remporté tous les titres majeurs. On les respecte énormément. Je sais, par ma propre expérience avec les Dragons, qu'il y a de la qualité avec des joueurs de classe mondiale comme Peacock, McGuire, Sinfield et Burrow. Sur ce genre de match, ils sont très difficiles à battre, spécialement chez eux. Ils tiennent 80 minutes : on a fait un gros travail défensif en prévision .
Avez-vous encore en mémoire la demi-finale de Super League perdue justement ici à Leeds (27-20, en 2009) ?
Oui, j'en ai parlé encore avec Jason Ryles après la séance de travail. Nous étions très proches de gagner, mais les cinq minutes magiques de McGuire avant la pause nous ont coûté la victoire.
Comment sont les Storm version 2013 ?
J'aimerais à penser que nous serons meilleurs. C'est difficile de remplacer six joueurs qui ont fait la dernière finale. Mais on a recruté des garçons de qualité comme Junior Moors, Junior Sau et Langi Setu mais des jeunes poussent très forts derrière comme Tohu Harris et Mahe Fonua. On en saura davantage dans quelques semaines sur le potentiel de l'équipe.

Melbourne Storm champion du monde des clubs

Le World club challenge, le championnat du monde des clubs entre le champion de Super League, les Leeds Rhinos, et celui de NRL, Melbourne Storm, a tenu ses promesses. Hier à Headingley (ANG), les Australiens ont battu les Anglais, tenants du titre, 18 à 14. Leeds a marqué 2 essais (Jones-Buchanan, Hall) et 3 coups de pieds (Sinfield), pour 3 essais (Slater, Bromwich, Harris) et 3 coups de pieds (Smith) à Melbourne. stade comble.

Rugby à 13 – Le Magic Weekend sur beIN Sport

Depuis plusieurs année, la Super League de rugby à 13 délocalise toutes les rencontres d’une journée dans un grand stade. Ce « Magic Weekend » aura lieu cette année à l’Ethiad Stadium de Manchester, l’antre du club de football de Manchester City. Cette grande fête du rugby à 13 ne pouvait pas laisser indifférent beIN Sport qui consacrera une large part de son antenne à cet évènement. Tout d’abord, la chaîne du rugby à 13 diffusera en direct sur son canal additionnel beIN Sport 3 Max l’intégralité des rencontres du samedi 25 mai, dont le match des Dragons Catalans. Ensuite durant la semaine, deux autres rencontres auront droit à un différé.
