  2. There's a Dishoom (Bombay cafe) and a Terence Conran restaurant opening there soon, too. The old coal drop buildings are being turned into shops and Waitrose are opening a supermarket and cookery school there. Even the annoying hipsters are catered for, thanks to Shrimpy's. http://www.kingscross.co.uk/eating-and-drinking
  3. I had lunch here today - Caravan Kings Cross - and the food was excellent. Flatbread with yoghurt, pork croquettes with lime mayonnaise and trout with samphire and caper butter. Outside on the square, little children played in the fountains, people lazed in the free deckchairs or on the terraces leading down to the canalside. The street food stalls were also doing good business. What has been done to a formerly run down no-go area is wonderful.
  4. The new North exit tunnel from Kings Cross/St Pancras. A stylistic departure, but I like it.
  5. Listened to a few tracks already, thanks to AutoRip, and I may have made a mistake. It sounds like a different (and much worse) band from the inventive and mighty sounds of 'In a Town called Addis'. It's all a bit whiney and unimaginative. Chalk it up to experience...
  6. Ooh, there's a new Dub Colossus album out! Ordered and expected tomorrow.
  7. Just discovered an archive of the short-lived show . Just check out the artists appearing!
  8. Very good stuff; haven't revisited their back catalogue for a while.
  9. YouTube's Music Vault has just expanded massively, thanks to a hookup with the Wolfgang's Vault website. Fill yer boots!
  10. The 1977 Bearsville Picnic. Video featuring Albert Grossman, Todd Rundgren, John Sebastian, Jesse Winchester, Paul Butterfield, Mick Ronson and Foghat.
  11. Just back from the second-hand record shop with: The Triffids - Raining Pleasure The Rutles - The Rutles Michael Nesmith - Nevada Fighter King Crimson - Three of a perfect Pair The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Big Hits and close Shaves War - Why can't we be Friends?
  12. The coast, you'll notice. Civilisation may have hopped off the boat, taken a look and decided not to stick around.
  13. The internet is a wonderful thing. For instance, if you want to see Muhammad Ali, Hulk Hogan, Cyndi Lauper and Liberace in the same photograph, all you have to do is...
  14. Nope, they (their contracted company anyway) connected me on the agreed date and, because there weren't enough connections on the building, the poor guy had to run a new line from up the street, across several building and down into the connection box. The broadband provider were three days late activating, but have emailed me to let me know they started charging my direct debit today instead of Friday. Three days isn't a big enough deal to make a fuss about. If I was running a business, it might be a different matter.
  15. Yay! Working now. Tested speed (12-13Mb/s), which will do okay for me. No more BT Wi-Fi with Fon, which I'd been using as a stopgap. The latter is a useful emergency fallback, but not cheap (although there's no line rental) and getting a useable signal can be iffy.
  16. Well, Dolly aced it. Proper showbiz. Next act, vaguely amiable guitar-strummer Ed Sheeran, must have been messing his pants.
  17. Looking at some of the opinions flying around after the gig, a common response to them was "This isn't normally my kind of music, but by God, they know how to deliver a show!" So it may have opened a few minds. Dolly Parton's the big name today - a stylistic contrast to Metallica, but someone else who is a total professional. She'll have 'em eating out of the palm of her hand.
  18. I had the engineer round yesterday to connect my line. He tested it and all seemed okay. Another engineer came round later and re-tested it, once again, with no problems. However, still no broadband available from the router. I'll give it 'til Monday.
  19. Michael Fremer's usually a good source for information on vinyl releases. On the same site are his evaluations of the latest Beatles mono reissues. Playing them on a system that costs about the same as a house is probably also a help when he's picking nits and comparing to original pressings. Above all, he's fun to read - I'm still searching for the comedy LP he released years ago.
  20. Analogue maniac Michael Fremer on the latest Led Zep reissues - worth a read: http://www.analogplanet.com/content/“ramblin’-on”-about-led-zeppelin-ii-or-i-got-blisters-my-eardrums
  21. ITV doing a bit of a Rik Mayall tribute tonight - the first epsisode of 'The New Statesman', followed by 'Dancing Queen', the comedy drama where Helena Bonham Carter essays a Northern accent and takes her top off.
