  1. Samuel Yirga & the Creole Choir of Cuba - I am the Black Gold of the Sun
  2. The Google Doodle for today (23/05/2012) is fantastic! You can even record and play back your creations.
  3. A proper one-star review of a Damien Hirst exhibition. The last time I saw paintings as deluded as Damien Hirst's latest works, the artist's name was Saif al-Islam Gaddafi. A decade ago the son of Libya's then still very much alive dictator showed sentimental paintings of desert scenes in an exhibition sponsored by fawning business allies. Searching for some kind of parallel to the arrogance and stupidity of Hirst's still life paintings, I find myself remembering that strange, sad spectacle.
  4. Dr John's new album 'Locked down' - produced by Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys. The Good Doctor is on top form here and the songs and arrangements are excellent too, especially the busy polyrhythmic drums. Unfortunately, at some point in the mixing/mastering process, it has become yet another victim of The Loudness War, being heavily compressed, which is a shame, as an excellent album could easily have been made even better.
  5. The order was placed Tuesday afternoon and arrived Wednesday morning. That's pretty damn quick! BTW, if you like intriguing and excellent wines, check out Familia Zuccardi - every one of their wines I've tried so far has been superb. The Caladoc, a grape variety I haven't seen anywhere else, is my current favourite (and the first one I opened from this case).
  6. Google beatbox - copy'n'paste the following into Google Translate, select German as the language and click on the little loudspeaker icon in the German box on the left hand side of the screen. pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk bschk pv bschk bschk pv kkkkkkkkkk bschk bschk bschk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk bschk pv bschk bschk pv kkkkkkkkkk bschkbschk bschk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk bschk pv bschk bschk pv kkkkkkkkkk bschk bschk bschk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk bschk pv bschk bschk pv kkkkkkkkkk bschk bschk bschk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk bschk pv bschk bschk pv kkkkkkkkkk bschk bschk bschk

  8. A mate, who has been checking this out at various times, says that the picture gets darker as night draws in, so that implies a pretty major (24-hour?) filming project.
  9. Calling this a mere clock is something of an undertsatement.
  10. Apparently when BBC America showed 'The Thick Of It', they had to use the bleep machine. It must have sounded like a cocaine freak sending Morse code.
  11. In these recession-hit times, it's good to see this sort of frugality.
  12. Count Ossie & the Mystical Revelation of Rastafari - Tales of Mozambique. Bonkers reggae, excellent drumming.

  14. I've just had a brief listen to Dr John's latest album 'Locked down' and have immediately ordered a copy. Tremendous stuff - the Good Doctor is in top form.
  15. You must wonder how much work a Fabien Barthez, Oliver Skeete or Charlie Dimmock lookalike is getting week in, week out, these days.
  16. To be honest, I don't have gas, but I'd continue tweaking and monitoring until it looks stable. Then check it every now and then.
  17. You'd need an accurate and responsive thermometer, especially at first (when bringing up to the required temperature). But that's only if it is really crucial for it to be a precise, unwavering heat. Otherwise, your average oven's heat settings would probably be good enough for most purposes.
  18. What to buy the person who has everything but good taste. Enjoy the customer reviews.
  19. Can be a bit of a lottery, what with the past practice of using reground vinyl. More recent re-pressings tend to be good quality jobs, as the vinyl market has begun to expand again, after the wilderness years.
  20. I don't look for collectables; just music that interests me. Which is, at least, a cheaper version of the hobby. My local second-hand shop always has a rack just for new arrivals, so you hit that first, before browsing the rest of his stock.
