Can you remember which teams it was we nilled at DP? I remember one being Bradford.

We only nilled one team at DP - beat Salford 34-0 - but we kept other teams to low scores such as Fev 2, Hull 4 etc

Also, that was the season we got the club record victory when we beat Leigh 94-4.

Are you sure? I thought we nilled 2 or 3 on the bounce. I remember us battering Bradford though when they were still the steampigs. Though we could probably give em a good game now... tongue.gif

Bradford was something like 34-12. It was played 3 days after an England game in which Newlove got injured and so missed the Town game. Dave Watson got sin binned and we scored three tries while he was off the field.

Seem to remember Shaun Austerfield debuted for them and had a nightmare at fullback.

Can't remember any other nillings than Salford.

Ive been trying to find results from that season and cant find em anywhere. Though your recollection does sound right to be fair, your memory is obviously a hell of a lot better than mine. Thinking back to that side is fun though, that pack was as good as anything in the league then. I can remember us losing our 1st game to Leeds only because Fawcett went off injured after dominating Iro all game, and narrowly losing to Saints with pickavance making the difference coming on as sub.

Sorry biggrin.gif

It was quite funny after the game watching your chairman demand the club blazers and ties back from the players in the bar saying they weren't fit to wear them ! I think he was very close to not letting them back on the bus and leaving them stranded biggrin.gif

yeah the last 10 minutes of that leeds game was pretty painful but it proved we could compete in the division. saints was a few weeks later - mulligan scored a great try with about five minutes left to out town ahead then bobie goulding got them out of it with a forward pass!

they pushed leeds all the way again in the regal trophy. 3 tries each but marwood only kicked one from five and we lost 18-14.

town were great at Derwent Park that season. Won about two thirds of the home games and were beating leeds twice, saints, wigan and warrington at half time.

Is this why we need a records and statistics section on this site so that we don't have to go and ratch out those old programmes and year books for some info on previous games?

We also did the treble over Wakefield Trinity that season winning home and away in the league and also beating them at home in the Regal Trophy. We then lost out to Leeds in the next round 14 - 18. We also won 3 away games that season and did the double over Hull and Donny. Oh, happy days that sadly we will never again see because of the closed shop that is now Super League. In fact we also beat Hull 3 times that season as well cos' we beat them in the Challenge Cup.

I remember when .............................

"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

Was the cup game v Trinity over xmas, I seem to remember a game where the weather was so bad I felt like I had pneumonia when I got home from it.

Both home games v Trinity were in December and neither were particularly memorable iirc! We beat them away at Easter just after the Cumbria and Calder mergers had been announced. Went down there with a scratch team, Nigel Wright got injured early and we won quite easily (26-12?) and Darren Carter scored a great 50m try.

The 3 wins over Hull were fantastic. The on-loan Danny Ellison scored two in the home league game, we stuffed them in the Cup by 30pts and won the away game 26-22 after frittering away a big lead. Kevin Pape made a matchwinning tackle at the end I think. The game was shown as Sky's Sunday night game - delayed coverage as it was in those days, not live.

Was the Pape tackle one the same game where Holgate had an absolute stormer?

There was a thread about 12 months ago on the subject of a part of this website being for all the teams statistics.
I volunteered to do the Town ones and there were offers for other clubs but nothing came of it.

"WIDNES VIKINGS CHESHIRES MOST FAMOUS RUGBY LEAGUE TEAM"

The plonker who posted this daft comment obviously doesn't believe in such things as apostrophes.

And also, there are NO rugby league teams in Cheshire. Widnes (together with Warrington) is in Lancashire because it's north of the River Mersey.
