“I think there are some changes that could be made which would make it competitive right through to the Grand Final,” explained Radford.
“It’s a bit long-winded but I think if after 23 rounds you get the League Leaders’ Shield; second and third get the World Club Challenge and then the Super 8s all start on zero.
“The Grand Final winners and the runner-up are the two form teams of the year then, aren’t they? You get reward for winning the shield and winning the Grand Final, too. Everyone’s striving to be good in October and I think that’d work really – there’s reward there.”
I know what he's getting at, but if Hull win more games during the first stage, they get the benefit in the second. They didn't, so were up against it - but even then it wasn't insurmountable.
Personally I think they should just reduce the amount of fixtures in the first stage to improve quality and player welfare and provide more international windows. This would in turn reduce the amount of pts gap there would be for the super 8's. They won't do it but it's the best solution.
