Former Newcastle Knights forward Alex McKinnon has revealed that he is now able to stand up out of his wheelchair for the first time since the horrific spinal injury he suffered last March.
McKinnon has been in rehabilitation on the Gold Coast since that accident suffered during an NRL game, and will return to the Knights to take up a new off-field role relating to recruitment alongside the likes of coach Rick Stone.
And coach Stone revealed that McKinnon was actually able to stand on his own the other day, news which is sure to bring a smile to Rugby League fans all across the globe.
“He’s just finished in his rehab and he actually stood up unabated the other day … he stood up on his own which is a terrific sort of step for Alex,” Stone said.
“I am in the final stages of my current rehabilitation program on the Gold Coast,” McKinnon said.
“When aided to stand up out of my chair, I am now able to stand for a short amount of time with assistance.
“I am set to return to Newcastle in the coming weeks to commence my new role with the Knights.”
