St Helens coach Keiron Cunningham has thrown his support behind winger Tommy Makinson for an opportunity with England at the end of the year – insisting his form will continue to improve as he recovers from injury.
Makinson was deemed unlucky by many not to get a shot with Steve McNamara’s side last year after a fantastic season for the defending champions in 2014, but after making a strong start to his return to the side following a serious ankle injury, Cunningham believes Makinson can muscle his way into the England squad amidst tough competition.
“I thought Tommy really was the standout winger at the start of the year and the injury came – an injury never comes at a good time does it – but the injury came at a bad time for Tommy,” Cunningham told the St Helens Reporter.
“He will get better and better. From game one he was a little bit scratchy and against Leeds he was a lot better than what he was and I’m sure he will be a lot better again this week.
“If Tommy does find some form I think he’ll be in with a shot.”
