A motion has been tabled in the House of Commons acknowledging the landmark 3000th edition of Rugby Leaguer and League Express, which was published this week.
The motion recognises the periodical, in its various guises, as “an important and stalwart part of the rugby league tapestry since 1949.”
It also encourages the libraries of both Houses to take a subscription to the periodical “so that Members may receive thorough analysis and commentary of the sport at all levels.”
Tabling the motion was Chairman of the Parliamentary Rugby League Group, and Leeds North West MP, Greg Mulholland. He said: “Rugby Leaguer and League Express have provided outstanding coverage of our sport over a sustained period. Members of Parliament would like to thank all involved for their dedication to covering and promoting rugby league. I hope to be able to read the latest edition of the periodical in the House of Commons library soon.”
David Hinchliffe, a founding Member of the Parliamentary Rugby League Group, and former Member of Parliament for Wakefield added, “Rugby Leaguer has been a shining light for a sport which has often been ignored by the mainstream media. I am delighted that Members of Parliament have recognised its contribution.”
The motion also congratulated editor Martyn Sadler on his stewardship since 1990. He responded: “I thank Members of Parliament for their support for Rugby Leaguer and League Express, and for the sport more broadly. I hope that we will be able to continue to provide coverage of our great sport for many years to come.”
