Ahead of the big Super League kick-off on Sky Sports tomorrow, there will be a special programme dedicated to one of the competition’s greatest ever players.
Super League will start without Jamie Peacock for the first time in over 15 years tomorrow, as the former Bradford, Great Britain and Leeds forward embarks on a new career at Hull KR off the field.
But, as a teaser from that programme, which airs tomorrow night, Peacock relives the moment he was offered a trial with Bradford – and how he initially didn’t go to the trial – but he did eventually, and the rest is history.
“So here I was, me sat on a bus at 19 years old, I’d had all these knock-backs and I’m about to go train with people who had played for New Zealand, played for Great Britain, played for Australia and just the enormity of the situation got the better of me and I bottled out of getting off the bus and going to train with the first team,” he said.
“Then on the way back I spoke to my dad and the realisation that I obviously had a large amount of people who believed in me, I obviously had the scouts at the Bulls, my coach at Stanningley, my dad, the coaches at Bradford Bulls and that was the lesson that I learnt that day that in times of doubt or if you are going to be ambitious, then you need to believe in yourself, you need to get off the bus, that became a story of mine – get off the bus.
“A lesson that’s served me well throughout my career.”
