Roberts commits to Cas

Castleford Tigers halfback has signed a new three-year deal with the Tigers.

The new deal will see Roberts remain a Tiger until at least the end of the 2019 season.

Roberts had recently discussed his future with League Express, but admitted he was happy with life under Daryl Powell.

Roberts signed for the Tigers last season and went on to appear in 25 Super League games, scoring nine tries. He soon becoming a fans favourite for his last minute drop goal in the 25-24 win against St Helens in June 2015 in one of the most exciting games to take place at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle in recent years.

Before joining the Tigers, Roberts played in more than 130 NRL games for Melbourne Storm, Parramatta Eels and Canterbury Bulldogs.

Roberts is delighted to agree an extension with the Tigers after settling here in West Yorkshire: “I’m excited to be working with Daryl for a further three seasons. Cas is definitely a club with a vision of success, and I want to play a part in that. My family and I are settled here and I love playing for this club and with these boys”

Castleford head coach Daryl Powell is thrilled to tie the 30-year old down: “It’s fantastic news for us at the club that Benny has decided to extend this stay for the next three years,

“He is a high quality player and person who has got better and better as he has fitted into the way that we play. His game is constantly improving and I think there is more to come from him as he continues to strive for excellence and development in all aspects of his game. He fits the type of player we want at the club with his professionalism, his desire to win things and his passion to always be at his best every week.”

Tigers CEO Steve Gill is excited for the future of his club: “This is a really important signing for us. As a club we are looking for consistency in our player pool, and it is a real statement of intent from the Tigers to secure this three year deal with Ben Roberts. Benny has showed a real desire to stay at the club and we were only too happy to keep him.”

Roberts will be sidelined for the coming Tigers game v Salford Red Devils on Sunday afternoon at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle after picking up a foot injury during Friday night’s game at St.Helens. However scans have confirmed no break so Roberts is hoping to get back on the pitch soon: “I’m very happy to find out my injury isn’t as bad as we first thought. Rest assured that I will be working hard to get back playing in a couple of weeks.”
