Castleford Tigers prop Lee Jewitt admits it’s the time of the season where winning takes precedence over performances: and his side need to get on a roll as quickly as possible.
The Tigers find themselves lodged in mid-tale with just seven games to go until the split for the Super 8s – and whilst a top-eight finish looks to be within their reach, Jewitt admits they have to start clawing back ground on the top four as soon as possible.
That will begin for Castleford with a West Yorkshire derby against Huddersfield on Friday night, and the forward insists that whilst it will be a tough ask to knock off the Giants, it is a vital game for their season.
“It’s always tough going there; they’re a big set and they’ve got a big pack so from our point of view, we’ve got to really get stuck into them and knock them off their game,” he said. “If you let them play they can hurt you.”
“If you look at the table it’s pretty close, so for us we need to start picking up some points now.
“At first, it was about finding our feet but we’re at the time of the year where you need to get wins and points more than performances.”
Jewitt is leaving the club at the end of the season after making the decision to move his young family to Australia next year, signing a deal with the Townsville Blackhawks.
And the prop admits he’s cherishing every second of his final year as a Super League player, saying: “I relish every game knowing I’m leaving at the end of the season.
“Week in and week out I’m playing against teams who I know I may not play against the quality of ever again, so for me it’s definitely something I think about – I just can’t wait for this week.”
