The RFL has invited Lizzie Jones, who thrilled the Challenge Cup crowd with her rendition of ‘Abide With Me’ at last year’s Wembley showpiece occasion, to present the trophy to the winning team in 2016.
Lizzie will be this year’s guest of honour, following in the footsteps of royalty and a cast list of notable people who have been asked to present the Challenge Cup since 1897.
But Lizzie admits to having mixed feelings in the last week following the tragic death of Huddersfield Giants Academy player Ronan Costello, whose passing was announced last Tuesday.
The family made it clear that they would like any charitable donations following Ronan’s death to be made to the Danny Jones Defibrillator Fund, which was set up by Lizzie Jones following the death of her husband in 2015.
