Featherstone Rovers’ top four hopes suffered a huge blow as they were convincingly defeated by Sheffield Eagles 35-10.
Mark Aston’s Eagles entered the match with just one win in ten matches and six defeats on the spin, however they produced a brilliant display to overcome Jon Sharp’s poor Rovers, who remain a point behind fouth-placed Halifax, but have now played a game more.
Sheffield surged into a 20-0 lead following scores through Cory Aston, Scott Wheeldon, Ben Blackmore and Garry Lo, with Jamie Cording’s late first-half try Featherstone’s only response.
The deficit was cut to ten soon after half-time as Jack Duckworth scored for Rovers, but from there the Eagles dominated.
Menzie Yere and Blackmore scored for the hosts to extend the lead to 28-10, before Michael Knowles added a drop goal. There was still time for one more try, however, as Elliot Minchella crashed over.
The victory moves Sheffield above Whitehaven into ninth, four points clear of relegation.
