Serbia Prepare to Face Touring Lionhearts

Serbia Rugby League has moved into the second phase of their preparations for this autumn’s European World Cup Qualifiers, against Wales and Italy, with a week-long training camp in Belgrade for the national squad followed by an international against the touring Yorkshire Lionhearts, scheduled for Monday 27th June at FK Radnički stadium.

Last year, the North West Lionhearts made the trip, winning narrowly inMakiš, 22 – 20.  This time, newly appointed SRL coaching advisor, Darren Higgins, who is leading the traning camp, will be keen to see the talent at his disposal.

“It’s a great pleasure for us to host the Lionhearts again,” said his assistant Ljubomir Bukvić. “Not only are they our dear friends, this match is a firm and much needed test for our side at this point in  our preparations for the 2017 World Cup C qualifiers. The boys are training hard trying to impress a new coach and not holding anything back.”

As a part of the tough schedule, the Serbia squad had a rigorous testing session at the National Sports Center, were they impressed with their fitness.

The Yorkshire Lionhearts, who have been in training since March, have brought a 21-man squad from nine clubs, and will play two matches during their five day stay. Today they face the Belgrade regional team at the FK Heroj Polet stadium in Jajinci.
